Obey traffic law

THIS IS an appeal to those who commute in the mornings and afternoons between Jackson and Cape. A law was passed in Missouri that on a four-lane highway you are supposed to stay in the right-hand lane unless you are passing. Then you move over into the left lane to successfully pass the other driver and then pull back into the right lane. Every day we get behind people going 35 and 40 mph in a 55-mph zone. They are in the left lane. You can't get around them. There are people in the right lane going slow, and that is where they belong. Right now I am the eighth car, and we are going 41 mph in a 55-mph zone. Folks, if you don't want to go the speed limit, either move into the right-hand lane or stay home until rush hour is over. But please obey the law. It is there to make sure that traffic moves in a safe and efficient manner.

The greased wheels

TO THE person whose stomach is tied in a knot: I think his brain is clogged up. If it weren't for the Reagan-Bush administration, the Clinton-Gore administration wouldn't have had such smooth sailing for the past eight years.

Averting the spotlight

THE GOVERNMENT case against the scapegoat, the Los Alamos nuclear scientist, was created to take the spotlight off Clinton and Gore for their treason during a national election when they accepted and allowed foreign communist Chinese money to infiltrate our democracy and national election process.

Payment plans

MEDICARE SENIORS: Pay attention. Do you know that Gore's Medicare prescription plan is only going to pay for your insurance health medicine after you have already spent $4,000? That is not going to help you any. Bush's plan is much better. He pays all along.

Keep 'em uninformed

SINCE THE Democratic convention it is reported that many women are supporting Gore because of the way he kissed his wife. How simpleminded. I see Southern Illinois coal miners campaigning for Gore without even considering that his environmental policies are the reason the mines are closing. Totally stupid. I see middle-class taxpayers supporting Gore because of his promises of more government programs, yet these people don't even know the only ones his proposals will benefit are the ones who don't pay any taxes. Go figure. It is no wonder Democrats are against education reform. Their very existence depends on ignorant, uninformed people.

I'm not excluded

IN RESPONSE to calling newcomers to the Jackson community Johnny-come-latelies: I deeply resent that. I am also new to this community. To imply that I have no voice in its internal affairs is ludicrous. Because I haven't lived here for a lifetime doesn't exclude me from the same privileges as one who has. From what I have heard since moving here about the Jackson school system, it needs something more than just money to solve its problems. What is it about some of the diehard Jackson people who resent some of us Johnny-come-latelies who are exposing your nature?

Republican surplus

THE REPUBLICAN presidents starting back over 40 years ago with Eisenhower followed by Nixon, Ford and Reagan and Bush all had to contend with a Democratic Congress, and those Democrats for 40 years created a huge deficit to where the national debt is over $3 trillion. Now this Republican Congress has only been there since 1994. In that short period of time it not only eliminated the deficit, but also created a surplus which Clinton likes to take credit for.

Terrible decisions

IN RESPONSE to the caller who misses the prayers at the Jackson football game but complimented the superintendent for not allowing it: He stated that the Supreme Court mandated the law. I suggest this man forgo his football games and stay home to read the Constitution. The Supreme Court does not make laws. It makes decisions. And as we have seen in Roe vs. Wade, sometimes it makes terrible decisions.
