MY COMMENT is in response to the letter from Susan Steel about the charges for the accused murderers of her mother, Willie May Vasquez. I can not even fathom how the prosecutor of Scott County Christy Baker-Neel could amend theses charges from first-degree to second-degree murder. My gosh, there have been confessions and help in finding their body. I am not from Scott County, but I believe everyone there should know what kind of prosecutor that they have. I agree that she should step out of this office and someone with decency and the knowledge of the justice system should be placed in there, If the shoe were on the other foot and Baker-Neel's mother had been murdered in cold blood and buried without so much as a though for her value as a human being, she would have a totally different outlook on this. Come on, people, let's speak out and get this prosecutor out of office and get someone in there who has a backbone and can try a murder case and get a conviction.
I AM reading about Gore's talk and the way he upsets people about health care and the government paying for prescription drugs out of people's tax money. I have no doubt that some of these people need help and have done everything they can during their lives to provide for themselves. I also have no doubt that many of these people have done nothing to provide for themselves at this time of their life. Now they want someone else to take care of them. I also have no doubt that the most of these people are able to pay for their own drugs if they wanted to, but they'd rather somebody else pay for them so they can save their money so they can leave it to their kids, which is totally ridiculous, because their kids are going to end up paying taxes to support their parents and many other parents also. This is something that is an emotional thing, and a lot of people are concerned. But there aren't that many people who are in need, in my opinion, and I have never seen anything that would tell me otherwise. It is mostly a selfish thing.
WHAT IN the world is Al Gore talking about when he says that people 250 percent above the poverty level will receive health insurance? I don't understand that at all. Do you? All these people apparently love the idea. They probably don't even know what he is saying.
CLINTON IS still working on getting a peace treaty between Arafat and Barak He stopped in Egypt on his way home from Nigeria to talk to the leader of Egypt for his help. I predict that Arafat and Barak will come to Camp David for peace talks again, because they would lie to have the $20 billion apiece that Clinton offered them at the last meeting if they would come up with a peace treaty. This information comes from a TV program of international intelligence reports. Also on this program they reported on a plot called the October Surprise that Clinton will declare on Iraq Oct. 1, because he wants to make sure Gore wins the election and will start a war to get it done. Doesn't it sound just like Clinton and Gore? Anything to win an election or anything else.
RICHARD BRUCE had two very articulate letters to the editor. He is hitting the nail on the head with a common problem in Jackson. The school board will let you speak and will listen politely and thank you for coming, but they will do what they've got to do. They are elected officials, and they have a responsibility to do what they will do. And anybody who disagrees will have the last voice at the ballot box.
I ABSOLUTELY love the irony of Speak Out. A caller recently made an adamant declaration of support for the open and public display of student IDs while, like me, cowering behind the anonymity of Speak Out.
I AM calling about the school dismissals because of the extreme heat. I think this probably could have been avoided partially by waiting to begin school after Labor Day and letting the school year run through May. I think our children and teachers and the staff alike would all have been spared many headaches if we just could have started the school year a little later. We at least would have avoided two weeks of extreme heat.
I AM over 70 years old, and I was raised as a belligerent Democrat. Many Democrats who call Speak Out have been raised that way too, and they never stop to consider what they say, what they think or what they were taught to think. If most Democrats today who derived this feeding from their parents would stop and think and look back and analyze what they are saying today, they would realize that they have to vote Republican, but they won't do that. They get in this belligerent mood, and they don't think of anything except how they were raised and what they were taught.
HOW MANY Cape Girardeau streets can be torn up at once, Inquired an apparently miffed Speak Out caller. Theoretically they could tear up all of them at once except for streets reserved for the rich and famous and streets often referred to collectively as Easy Street.
JUST A complaint about the schools letting out because of hot weather. I think the object is to get ahead of snow days, and then there are letting out for hot days. Maybe they ought to go to school between Labor Day and Memorial Day.
I WONDER why the city people get to vote on county zoning, but when they have something in the city like a sales tax we are not allowed to vote on it.
I WANT to comment about the hoopla that has been brought up about Joe Lieberman because he has been talking religion. Lieberman is an Orthodox Jews. Orthodox Jews are pro-life. They are against abortions, and they also think homosexuality is a sinning lifestyle. Lieberman is just like a bunch of people here in Cape who claim to be born-again Christians, yet they vote for people who support abortion and the homosexual lifestyle. These people are hypocrites. Jesus said that because you are lukewarm, I will spew you from my mouth. These lukewarm Christians who think they can call themselves born again while they support homosexual rights and abortion are only fooling themselves. You can't fool God. God sees into your heart. You might as well give up your Christian religion, because you are doing nothing but insulting him.
