Wishy-washyness

DAVID LIMBAUGH has now taken to praising George W. Bush because he believes Bush is apolitical and not a political purist. Since I thought Limbaugh was committed to conservative ideology and demanded that the likes of Bush pass a conservative ideology litmus test, I am stunned. That Bush is, in many ways, a moderate is no surprise. But Limbaugh as a centrist?! It's so hard to believe. If Limbaugh continues to sound like a middle-of-the-roader, he'll be read out of the true-blue conservative movement and will be forever condemned to the vast wasteland of wishy-washyness.

Tables are turned

Now that both of the Republican candidates for the presidency and vice presidency avoided service, I wonder how you super-patriots who jumped all over Clinton for avoiding service will try to excuse these two. If you don't admit that you made a mistake in the past, you will look as phony.

Good turnover rate

I was interested in the article that the paper did about the turnover rate in the police department. That turnover rate sounds extremely low compared to other professions. I'm a nurse, and our turnover rate has been over 25 percent ever since I can remember, so I think 10 percent is wonderful. My spouse is a stockbroker, and they have over a 20 percent turnover every year. I think 10 percent is pretty great, and I am amazed they can get them to stay that long.

Sounds unorthodox

I have a question. Is Joe Lieberman really an Orthodox Jew? According to my Bible, homosexuality and abortion are condemned in the Old Testament, yet the Democratic platform endorses both gay rights and abortion. Could Lieberman perhaps be an unorthodox Jew?

Listen to yourself

Do people really know what they are saying? A person made the comment that at the ninth grade orientation students were told not to stop and pick up dropped items in the hallway because they would be trampled. As an incoming freshman, I know that this is a false statement. A student might have said not to stop in the hallway, but that is about it. Also, to the person who called in and asked why build more schools if it is only going to attract more people to the area and make us have to build even more schools: The school districts is not building schools to attract more people. It is building schools to handle the number of students we already have. I end with the question that I started with: Do people really know what they are saying?

Too many animals

I want to commend the humane society for all the efforts to save the lives of the many animals that come through the doors. What an astonishing number of animals they had to put down because of uneducated people. That is the problem. I think people just don't want to realize and face the problem. Why do people want to breed more animals? Is it the money? How much money can a single dog produce? Think about the health and overpopulation of the animals that you bring in this world. For the humane society staff, there are no words to even explain what you do there. No one could ever do the job you do. Maybe the people who cause the problem in animal overpopulation need to come and spend the day or two putting down the animals they bring in. You are truly a work of God.

Go somewhere safe

Robert CRON's recent letter to the editor convinced me that the man has an amazing in depth knowledge of guns. Cron's letter also convinced me to move far away from Cape to a place where I will feel safer, say Croatia.

Blaming others

I would like to make a comment about the Democrats and the press. I believe when the Democrats lose the election, it is going to be by a landslide. I believe George Bush is going to win by 70 percent if not 75 percent. However, when they lose, the Democrats will blame the news media for not giving them accurate coverage. Democrats blame everyone else.

Blame news media

Here we go again. The press is trying its very best to tear down such a decent man as Al Gore. They are trying to convince us that he is a liar and Gore is trying to distance himself from President Clinton. The only liars are the media. Gore has state numerous times that he forgives President Clinton's one mistake and still considers him a friend. The media has lost credibility with most people long ago.

Time for dunce cap

Well, it is time to give the golden dunce cap to the head of Cape Girardeau's street department. Not only have they got Broadway torn up, they have to work on the street right next to Broadway, which is Bellevue. It will mess up the whole side of town and people can't get through to get to the post office or anything. They have a limited supply of people who work on the street department, and I'm just wondering what the poor old business people are going to do around Broadway and Bellevue and downtown if it takes two years like it took them two years to do Bloomfield Road.

Close turn lane

The intersection of Sprigg and Broadway could be dangerous. Why wasn't the left-turn lane blocked off so that people knew that Broadway was closed?

Hole in the head

I sure hope Jim Drury's lawsuit against the city keeping them from spending motel tax money on the River Campus holds out. We need that River Campus like we need a hole in the head.
