I'M SICK and tired of these mental midgets calling Speak Out claiming that the Democrats are the only ones looking out for the working people. I work in construction, and my wife is a beautician. I guess we qualify as working people. As you might guess, we certainly aren't wealthy. The Republicans, not the Democrats, wanted to eliminate the marriage penalty, which would save this working person around $700 per year. However Mr. Clinton, a Democrat, vetoed the bill saying it would only benefit the wealthy. Let me repeat. My wife and I are working people. My wife and I are not wealthy. The Republicans passed a bill that would save us $700 per year. The Democrats vetoed that bill.
OK, SO how many other people were denied the right to vote on the city road tax Tuesday? After I had finished my voting on the ballot for the party primary and turned it in, I asked for my ballot on the city road tax. They said that was on the bottom of your party ballot. So too late. They said I wasn't the only one who missed the chance to vote. How can you put a city project on the bottom of a party primary ticket?
A SPEAK Out caller accurately surmised that the terms right-wing and left-wing had to do with the seating arrangements in the legislative houses. It originated during the days of the French Revolution. Legislators who sat on the right favored retention of the monarchy. Those who sat on the left favored democracy. Come to think of it, it is still that way today if the right-wingers in Congress have their way, we will soon witness the coronation of King George III. King George I was George Washington, and George Herbert Walker Bush was King George II. If history repeats itself, there will be a revolution for independence against King George III, and the rebellious forces favoring representative democracy will succeed. I encourage all Speak Out readers to support the revolution when it comes. If we don't hang together, we will hang separately.
WIDELY RESPECTED political thinker James Nall recently attempted a little humor in one of his letters to the editor. He is not there yet, but if Nall keeps at it, he may someday reach the humor level of syndicated columnist David Broder.
The next time Jackson wants to pass a school levy, they might want to make some signs readable from the roadside so that it will encourage people to vote for the levy The signs that were put out were so small that you couldn't even really tell what was on the signs.
The person who called the national health-care plan Marxist is completely unaware that we are the only major industrialized country without a national health plan, we have over 40 million people without health insurance and we pay the highest percent of gross national product on health care than most of the countries. Abortion was approved by the Supreme Court, and the majority of justices were appointed by Republican presidents when the Roe vs. Wade decision came about. Homosexuality is not explicitly a Democratic problem. Bush met with the homosexual group. Republicans had a homosexual congressman address their convention. Dick Cheney's daughter is a homosexual, as is the sister of Newt Gingrich.
I was reading where the Jackson School District says it is going to make a lot of cuts and wants to know where the people think the district should get the money in order for this not to happen. Take the money the district has designated for the senior high school for land to be bought if it becomes available. Use it now for the junior high and new technology.
