IN RESPONSE to the person who said the Democratic Party lives in the past: The Republican Party has no past to be proud of. And they have no present to boast about. And they certainly have no future. Their past is their future. They think the same way as they did in the past: trickle-down economics, anti-labor, anti-right-to-work law, anti-minimum wage bill and anti-Medicare and national health care. I wouldn't boast about my past either if I were Republican...

Can't brag about it

IN RESPONSE to the person who said the Democratic Party lives in the past: The Republican Party has no past to be proud of. And they have no present to boast about. And they certainly have no future. Their past is their future. They think the same way as they did in the past: trickle-down economics, anti-labor, anti-right-to-work law, anti-minimum wage bill and anti-Medicare and national health care. I wouldn't boast about my past either if I were Republican.

This is funny

I THOUGHT it was the job of delegates to the Republican National Convention to shape GOP policy and be an important part of this process. What a joke. One of the delegates from the 8th District in Missouri is going to collect buttons. Ha, ha.

Not for the poor

TO THE Republican who says it's a myth that the Democratic Party is for the poor: I agree that the working poor pay taxes. They pay taxes that the wealthy get write-offs for. Is the caller saying the Republicans are for the poor? Bush vetoed the unemployment insurance bill. Bush vetoed the family leave bill. Republicans are against raising the minimum wage. I dare the caller to call again and tell me how the Republicans are for the poor.

Get state money

I BET Jim Drury is right. I bet the hotel tax will raise $100 million to put up a $15 million building for the performing arts at SEMO. And then they'll spend another $25 million or so in interest charges and things, so they'll have $60 million left over. What to do with $60 million? It shouldn't have been taxed to start with. It is a problem. Did you ever notice that Southeast Missouri State University is not a city college. There's no reason for city taxes to pay for SEMO. It's a state university. Sikeston and Jackson ought to have just as much opportunity to help pay for it. So, SEMO, get your money from the state and quit bothering Cape.

More phone tax

I WAS shocked when I opened my phone bill to find out there was another increase in the federal user end tax. We were paying $3.50 a month for this. Now it's $4.35 per month. I was wondering why we weren't told about this ahead of time. It's going to get to the point where poor people cannot afford a telephone because of all the taxes charged. A telephone nowadays is not a luxury, it's a necessity. But you can't tell that to the big shots who sit around and raise these prices on senior citizens who are on fixed incomes.

Twisting numbers

THIS IS to Jim Drury. I'd sure like to give you a crying towel. You're just mad because it isn't in Druryville in the west end of Cape. I'm sick of you and your kind of whining about this because you can't get your way. By the way, the Show Me Center on this end of town is the best thing that ever happened. Anyone can manipulate numbers, just like you said in the paper today, but you're the master at it. You twisted everything that was factual around.

He can afford to pay

I'D LIKE To comment on Jim Drury's full-page complaint about taxes and the university. Mr. Drury expressed his concerns about the fact that his grandchildren, who were born with a silver spoon in their mouths, may have to pay a little tax on their hamburgers, pizza and ice cream. He needs to realize just how fortunate he and his family are. There are many families in this community that cannot afford to eat hamburgers, pizza and ice cream. It goes to show that those who have the most, but pay the least amount of taxes, tend to squeal the loudest when they are asked to contribute to projects like the River Campus. More on this later.

Scare tactics

CAPE GIRARDEAU parks director Dan Muser recently speculated that taking out underbrush for the purpose of providing a more scenic view of the river around Cape Rock Park might mean removing redbud and dogwood trees. That's absurd, Mr. Muser. They would never remove redbud and dogwood trees. Those are seamy scare tactics.
