OUR SUPREME Court, in a very narrow decision, has reaffirmed its ability to proclaim death. It has allowed the death penalty for convicted criminals and for abortion victims. I am pro-life, as are most churches. I think we ought to have a sanctity of life that protects not only criminals, but unborn babies. I wish the political parties would decide to be totally pro-life. They are not. The Republicans are pro-life for unborn babies. The Democrats are pro-life for convicted murderers. It's a tough decision, but if I have to decide one or the other, I'm pro-life for unborn innocent babies. But why don't we be pro-life for both?
TO ALL the Cardinal fans, a few predictions: First, St. Louis will not make the playoffs. If you think so, you're in a dream world. McGwire will not lead the majors in home runs. Their luck has run out. Tony LaRussa is about the poorest manager in baseball, and at the end of the year, they will be fighting for the cellar as usual. Sincerely, a Cub fan.
I DON'T believe the economy is as good as Bill Clinton and his friends think it is. Look at how many jobs were lost in this area just this last year. I think what happened was the Republican presidencies before had a strong economy for Clinton to go into, and now at the end, we're seeing it unravel. We also have our gas pumps to thank our Democrats for. I don't think the economy is that well from what I'm seeing.
I'D LIKE to thank three groups of people. The two police officers for bringing our statue of Mary back to us. This is the second time she has been stolen, and the police department has safely returned her. Second, the city for the super remodeling of Bloomfield Road. We drive over it every day, and it's really great. The Southeast Missourian for its great stand-out headlines on the Religion page and the front page. They are super. Thank you all.
THIS IS concerning all the talk I heard when I moved to Jackson. One of the main topics was their pride in their streets. What's the deal with North Farmington? It's becoming worse than a gravel road and breaking up more and more every day. Where's the pride for this road, or doesn't it count since it's on the edge of the city limits?
I'M 70 years old. I take lots of medicine, and I don't get by with $100 a month. I get so tired of hearing these seniors gripe about wanting everything given to them. Let them save money from when they're young. If they want to reduce the price of medicine for the old people, they should reduce it for the youngsters too. Seniors always want everything handed to them free. They should have thought about saving money for their old age when they were young. They should quit their griping.
I HAD to call in when I read about the Supreme Court ruling about gays in the Boy Scouts. I am not homophobic, and I do not believe gays are horrible, rotten people. I believe they are people just like I am. However, I do think their behavior is immoral and wrong. I have a son who is a Boy Scout. I'd be very concerned about sending him on camping trips and so on and him being influenced by people who behave in that manner. A private organization has the right to limit its membership. I'm so grateful that finally the Supreme Court has listened to what most of Americans want
I HAVE a little gun control history for those who want guns controlled. In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control, and they killed 20 million dissidents who were unable to defend themselves. Germany established gun control in 1938, and in six years 13 million Jews and others were killed because they were unable to protect themselves. China established gun control in 1935, and from 1948 to 1952 20 million political dissidents unable to defend themselves were killed. Cambodia established gun control in 1956, and between 1975 and 1977 1 million educated people unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
BOO, ABC Disney. I agree with the theme of a column recently reprinted by Gary Rust. The gist of it was that Rush Limbaugh was rejected as a commentator for "Monday Night Football" for political reasons. I'll bet anything that during the interview they asked him an extremely difficult question virtually no one would be able to answer simply in order to set Rush up for a rejection. My best guess would be that they asked Rush to explain the out-of-date, no-longer-used, single-wing offense, knowing full well he would only be able to explain the right-wing one.
A SPEAK Out caller recently said, in part, "Not too many people on either side of the political fence have the courage to stand up and speak out for their beliefs." I strongly disagree. People are very free with telling you where they stand and what they believe when it comes to politics. Even the uninformed speak up without hesitation. The only ones reluctant to tell you where they specifically stand on issues are elected politicians.
I'M READING the paper about the Headstart day care being shut down. The comments said they are going to try to find out once and for all why people won't use free services. This is the mindset of these people who work at these places. They have to go out and recruit people to receive the goodies, when in essence the people don't want it. They go out and try to twist arms to get people to participate in it. It's ridiculous. It's just another way to blow taxpayers' money so these people can have a job.
EVERY TIME I see or hear someone lauding the Reagan and Bush administrations, I remember what they did to the national debt with their phony supply-side economics that they knew wasn't going to work before they started. Remember the story about the reporter who interviewed Mrs. Lincoln after Abe was shot: "Other than that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?" The people who laud Reagan and Bush are about as insightful as that reporter in understanding what is really important in the long term in those administrations. Our grandkids will be cleaning up the fiscal mess they left, and it'll affect our national policies adversely for generations.
