WHAT A strange phenomenon. After all we know about this corrupt Clinton-Gore administration, Clinton's accomplice in abuse of power, Albert Gore, has the gall to think he should be elected to continue this autocratic control regime. Absolutely unbelievable. Will deceit never cease?...

Expect more deceit

WHAT A strange phenomenon. After all we know about this corrupt Clinton-Gore administration, Clinton's accomplice in abuse of power, Albert Gore, has the gall to think he should be elected to continue this autocratic control regime. Absolutely unbelievable. Will deceit never cease?

Leftist takeover

HAS THERE been a left-wing takeover at the Southeast Missourian? I can't stand much more of these extremist left-wing manifestos emanating from the pages of the Southeast Missourian. The most recent example directly violated the Southeast Missourian's credo of "the government which governs least, governs best," and that laws passed for the purpose of social engineering are doomed to failure. I speak of the recently published editorial which defended the passage of a law whose sole purpose seems to be to attempt to find out if still more laws are needed. I'll swear I thought I was reading an editorial reprinted from the Communist Party's propaganda newspaper, The Daily Worker.

Suggested slogan

STATE SEN. Peter Kinder, R-Cape Girardeau, has suggested "death to the death tax" as a rallying cry for this fall's general election. That's a good one. But I think I have a better one, although it's kind of long and may not have as broad an appeal as the senator's suggested slogan. Anyway, here it is: "Death to the right-wing demagoguery daily spewing from the allegedly but wrongly characterized commonsense conservative opinion page of the Southeast Missourian." What do you think? An alternate, shorter, more universally appealing slogan might be simply "Speak Out Rules."

Private vs. public

HERE WE go again with the public schools crying for more money. I'm sorry, but Jackson will have to pull my teeth out to get me to vote for a tax increase for their schools. My parents sacrificed to send my brothers and sisters and me to a private school, and my wife and I are doing the same for our children. It's not easy to do, and I know it's a choice we made, but how is it that our school can educate a child for around $2,500 per student compared to the public school spending at least $5,000 or $6,000? Once again, the stark differences between a private organization and a government one become so obvious. Efficiency is not even part of the vocabulary of a government institution. I guess the Jackson schools are no different. Maybe the private schools should start a consulting business to teach these money-hungry, tax-loving public schools how to operate. And another thing: More money and smaller class size do not equal better education. It's been documented and proven many times. I'd venture to say that my $2,500 children are probably better educated than most of the $5,000 or $6,000 kids that come out of the public schools, and mine even get a bonus of Christian values. Imagine that. Please use your common sense and do not vote for throwing away your hard-earned money for the Jackson School District.

Time to pay up

ANYBODY WHO wants to cut the federal taxes is a selfish deadbeat. We must pay down the national debt in good times. The next time we have a recession, and we will have a recession, the burden of the present debt will make it much harder to stimulate the economy by using building projects to put the people to work. People who deride the other politicians as tax-and-spenders are complete jerks, when what they advocate is to spend and not to pay down the debt run up by some fiscal dopes who spent and did not collect enough taxes to pay for what they spent. Pay up, you deadbeats.

Gun lessons

I am so sorry about the Jackson boy dying from a gunshot wound. This is something we need to talk to our kids about. We need to teach our kids how to handle guns. We need to teach our kids that guns are dangerous and that we don't play with them as toys. We need to tell our kids that we always treat a gun as though as it is loaded. Never point a gun at a person. We've got to remember to be careful around guns.

Lots of bridge players

I enjoy the bridge columns in the paper. I know at least 20 people who play bridge, and they all appreciate the bridge column in the Missourian. There are quite a few bridge players in Cape Girardeau and in the vicinity.

New day dawning

If Microsoft is forced to break up into two companies, it should do like all these other large companies are doing and merge the next year. This lawsuit against Microsoft is nothing more than government power displayed by the Clinton-Gore administration just like they sued the tobacco companies and threatened the firearm manufacturers. All power bullying. Hang in there, Bill Gates. A new day is dawning in November.

How can this be?

How can some people I know who think they are religious except when it comes to abortion support abortion and say a woman's right is to her body? What about the child's right and, most importantly, God's right? If you don't believe in God, I can understand your position. But for Christians it's unconscionable. Our president claims he loves children, but he accepts partial-birth abortions. Who would condone this? Only the lowest people we have in the world, that's who.

Stump City

A lot of great trees have been coming done around Cape, using new sidewalks as an excuse. Why can't the city remove the offending roots after removing the old sidewalk, thereby saving the tree and getting their new sidewalk at the same time? The need to replace these old sidewalk is certainly debatable at the expense of Cape trees. Furthermore, if the city is removing these trees, why does it not remove the stumps? Perhaps it is to prevent more trees from being planted. At this rate the inner city will become know as stump city.

He did it for us

I read W.T. Woods' letter to the editor regarding the obsessive GOP tactics in trying to bring down Clinton. I agree wholeheartedly. There is no question in my mind that the Republicans have been wrong in chasing down poor Bill Clinton. Aren't there better things to do in the legislative process than hassle a poor guy for selling military secrets for campaign contributions and jeopardizing the integrity of the office? Woods is absolutely correct. Mr. Clinton did go to bat for this country. He saved the Constitution. The poor guy was so interested in saving the Constitution that he engaged in an extramarital affair in the oval office and then lied about it all to save the Constitution. Thank God for President Clinton.

Great train ride

I was just calling to say that my family lives in Jackson, Mo., and we rode the St. Louis Mountain and Southern Railway and had an excellent time. My children were allowed to blow the horn on the steam engine. We were allowed to ride back on the caboose for an additional charge, and everyone on the train was extremely nice. The person who wrote in from Paducah needs to realize that the steam engine is a piece of our history. I am proud that it is in our town.

Support for diabetics

As a diabetic, I wanted to say that I was proud to know that Justin Gibbs and everyone else from the American Diabetes Association did a wonderful job with the Diabetes Youth Walk 2000. Mr. Gibbs as well as everyone who helped him with the youth walk should be commended. I'm also glad to know that all the money went into the new Youth Advocate Fund. I was aware of the fund, and I'm proud to know that Southeast Missouri made a contribution in finding a cure to Type 1 diabetes. Congratulations again to Mr. Gibbs, and thank you to everyone who helped make the walk a success.

Now he's Socrates

I don't know if I've changed or if the Republican Party has changed. All I know is that I used to see letters to the editor from W.T. Woods as the product of a crazed, partisan, Democratic Party propagandist. However, these days the content of his letters critical of the GOP are so accurate. He has to me become no less than the Socrates of Southeast Missouri, the Edmund Burke of the Bootheel and, yes, the king of commonsense conservatism.

It's getting old

I just want to say that I agree with Mr. Woods 100 percent. It's about time they give up on his dirty name calling. This man made a moral mistake. He should be forgiven. He's asked for forgiveness. To pick up the paper like we do here every day here and see some kind of a dirty cartoon and the dirty remarks in the Speak Out is getting a little bit old.

Vote for the dog

I listened to Gov. Mel Carnahan on the radio and he was bereaved at the loss of his dog that passed away, saying the dog was so good with children. Are you good with children, Mr. Carnahan? Isn't that just like a liberal, a man who supports abortions, even partial-birth abortions, and mentions the children as his cohort Bill Clinton does. Yet thousands are killed every year. Mr. Carnahan, even your dog had more compassion than you do.
