I had the pleasure to witness an amazing event. Display of love

I had the pleasure to witness an amazing event. About a dozen or so members of the soon-to-start Vantage Point Church were at Ameri-Mart and bought about a thousand dollars of gas for whoever happened to drive up. Many of the free gas recipients were truly in need of the church's generosity, while others were lucky to be at the right place at the right time. Although I didn't get there in time to get free gas, I left feeling blessed to have witnessed such a display of love for our fellow man. Thank you, Vantage Point members, for restoring my faith in the goodness of people. I plan on attending your new service when it starts. God bless you all.

Bad grading

BEWARE of the new grading system in the Jackson School District, which is another part of the dumbing down of America. I am not interested in how my child compares to district or state standards. How does that relate to how my child is doing? I want to know how my child is doing. I am not interested in comparisons or vague terms like beginning to demonstrate, approaching, meeting or exceeding district and state levels. Are we afraid to give an F if that's what the student has earned?

Council comments

TRY getting on the Cape Girardeau City Council agenda if you want to speak. It's harder than you think. So what if a particular resident speaks briefly after every meeting? Part of the job of council members is to listen to voters. I hardly doubt that having a 30-minute open-mike session with a three-minute time limit per person is that much of a hardship to our public servants.

Bad light

I am elderly and homebound. I do not like commercials for nursing homes that portray the elderly as being childish, foolish or silly, which we are not. Other people I talk to say they do not like the way the elderly are shown on some commercials.

Head, not heart

In regard to the person who said she did research on both sides before making a decision when voting: She said she does her research but then votes with her heart. If she's going to vote with her heart, she might as well skip the research. She needs to vote with her head, not her heart.

No for casino

The Cape Girardeau City Council voted to throw its weight behind the Isle of Capri's effort to build a $125 million casino downtown Cape Girardeau. I'm going to throw my weight in the opposite corner. I'm going to vote no when we decide on Nov. 2.

Need a raise

I am a 87-year-old woman. I live by myself. I still drive and own my little rundown house, which needs repairing. My Social Security check is almost $700 a month. To pay insurance on a house, a car, clothes and other things there's no money left hardly for food. It's hard to get by. It's hard to think how the president's wife took a vacation and spent all of that money and us old seniors are doing without. They can't give us a raise on Social Security, which they knew we needed.

Casino comments

THE Southeast Missourian is so one-sided in its news reporting. For instance on the Isle of Capri casino, your front-page story said, "After asking several questions about the casino site and construction plans, some people spoke out in favor of the casino project." There's no explanation about the questions and construction plans, just comments about the people in favor of it.
