Secular society

DAVID LIMBAUGH has fought the good fight, but it's about time to throw in the towel. There's no way America is going to revert to some kind of pre-enlightenment medieval European mindset. A secular society we are, and a secular society we shall remain with strong First Amendment protection for freedom of religious belief and practice. If anything, Limbaugh would be better served to encourage secularization among the real threat to liberty these days coming from zealous religious fanatics all over the world.

Water problems

I AM wondering if the water problems in Scott City on Saturday are a peek into what is to come if the ethanol plant is built on Nash Road. We have enough water problems on our own without adding more: no water, no water pressure.

Driving offense

INTERESTING: A woman who filed false rape charges against an innocent man (who was imprisoned for the offense) cannot now be charged with perjury because of the statute of limitations. A young man involved in a fender-bender accident 14 years ago while backing out of his driveway, was ticketed for having no insurance. He was never able to come up with the fine and court costs. He still cannot get a driver's license in any state because that ticket is still on the books. This, my friends, is ridiculous. You can rape, steal, assault, even murder, and seven years later it's all taken away, but a driving offense is there forever.

Extra supplies

I AGREE that students should not be able to raise their grades by bringing extra supplies. Neither should a child be embarrassed because his parent cannot or will not support extra supplies. Try sending home a Secret Friend List. Have supplies left at the office with a tag stating the teacher's name and grade.

Thanks for water

I WOULD like to thank the wonderful employees at the Rhodes 101 Travel Center at the airport exit off Interstate 55. Last Wednesday they handed out cold water to customers as they pulled up to the pumps. I appreciated that water very much. God bless you and thank you.

Not a priority

THE RESIDENTS of Scott City have been under a boil-water advisory since the beginning of the weekend. Apparently, a water main malfunctioned. What malfunctioned was the local administration, having the locals suffer because either there are no public workers available or the city doesn't want to pay overtime. If this had happened in Cape Girardeau, it would have been attended to as a priority. Not us. Mr. Mayor, this is why we pay taxes to live in this city. This is why we pay our water bill every month. Do your job, or maybe we should take measures to ask Cape Girardeau to annex us.

Productive workers

U.S. WORKERS are the most productive in the world. That's why I so dearly wish sectors of agribusiness, construction and so forth would hire them instead of searching for illegal aliens.

Utility-bill increase

FOR THE second month in a row my utility bill is close to $300. Last year my bill with the same usage was only $200. Thank you, Jackson for our 36 percent increase.

Don't blame restaurants

HOW WOULD outlawing drive-through windows help the litter problem? People would still walk in and get food in a bag and eat on the way to where they are going. It's not the restaurant's fault people litter.

Vial of justification

WE HAVE a found a vial of a chemical -- toxic, perhaps? -- at a U.N. office. Now all in Iraq is justified. Perhaps the next article found will be the burgeoning industrial plant where this precious vial of justification was produced.

Need intervention

ABOUT THE man in Chaffee going through the trash: I have relatives who live on that street. The man isn't quite right in the mind. He is searching through the trash for food, and even when the temperatures soared to 100 degrees, he was going through people's trash and getting vegetables and meat and taking them home to eat. He lives with his mother who is ill. They need someone to intervene. It isn't because they need food. It is a mental thing. The man is always buying stuff. He needs supervision. Who would you call to help someone like this? He probably needs to be in a group home. It is a worry to the neighbors who have tried to encourage him to stop doing this.

Center-lane safety

REGARDING CENTER lanes: Isn't it safer on a road that has four lanes with a center lane to cross the first two lanes and enter the center lane, stop and, when it is clear, continue on into the third lane? The center lane would be a safety lane. A merge lane is one used to pick up speed merge into traffic. A safety lane should not be driven in more than 100 feet. This is what most states and cities I have driven in allow. If center lanes are for left turns only, then every driveway and street that enters such a road without a light should have a sign that says "Right turn only." Please consider this, Jackson.

Poor farmers

I FEEL so sorry for the farmers when I drive by them harvesting their crops in their new tractors and combines and crew-cab pickups. Why not give all businesses a subsidy so we can all have new equipment and pickups on the taxpayers' backs? What's good for some should be good for all.

Hem and haw

REPUBLICAN STATE officeholders will likely hem and haw when asked why the Bush administration has chewed out Missouri's failure to demand enough of our public schools and also slacking off on reporting the schools' shortcomings.
