Street markings

CAPE GIRARDEAU needs to put stripes or reflectors on streets. At night when it's raining, you cannot see. It's easy to have an accident.

Great photo

THE PHOTOGRAPH on the front page of Saturday's newspaper by Aaron Eisenhauer was one of the neatest pictures I have ever seen. It took me a moment looking at it just to define exactly what it was. I think he should have an award for this. It was fantastic.

History repeats

I'M 86 years old and have lived long enough to see FDR bail out the man who couldn't get a job back during the Depression and now see the Republicans bailing out Wall Street in 2008. What goes around comes around.

Scott City cleanup

I WOULD like to commend Scott City police chief David Lehman and Scott County Sheriff Rick Walters for the excellent community cleanup they have accomplished in Scott City. Their use of low-risk inmates to mow, weed, clear debris and pick up litter is a practical way to enhance our city while providing inmates the opportunity work off their court costs and fees. Cape Girardeau should take note of this.

Altenburg fair

I WANT to thank everyone involved with the Altenburg fair. Our family went both nights and had a wonderful time. The entertainment was great, the food was wonderful, and we had a good time. It truly is the best little fair in the land.

Keep an eye out

THIS VANDALISM in Cape Girardeau and Jackson has got to be contained. Why don't people in each neighborhood set up a neighborhood watch, keep it quiet so no one else knows and watch over these places at various times of the night? Someone's bound to catch someone that way. These individuals need to be thrown in jail.

Misplaced trust

I WILL support the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street if all the yuppie bankers, baby boomer bosses and federal legislators who allowed this mess are fed to the sharks in the bay under the Statue of Liberty. If this doesn't happen, history will repeat itself. We have been sold down the river by those we trusted.

Restroom breaks

I AM amused at the comments about teachers not allowing children to use the rest¿room at school. Children are given a restroom break midway through the morning and afternoon and at noon. The problem occurs when, 10 minutes after being back in the classroom, a child asks permission to go to the restroom. When asked if they used it when the class took a break, they usually say, "I didn't have to use it then." The children learn the first week of school that when break time is given to them, they should use the facilities even if they think they do not need to. This alleviates a lot of disruptions throughout the day.

Hateful columns

SOMEONE ELSE has expressed dismay at the tone of a piece by syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin, as I did several weeks ago. Although a talented writer, Malkin has become increasingly hostile and hateful in her message. It appears as if hate, not information, has become her message. Radically divisive and hateful thoughts have no place in the Heartland.

Trapped overseas

WE NEED to bring all our overseas troops home while we still have the money to do it. If we do not do it now and wait too long, we will not only deal with a major financial depression, but we will be in danger of invasion, since most of our troops will be trapped overseas.
