Church cooking

IF you didn't go to the Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville on Aug. 15, you missed a good country meal with homestyle food. The chicken and dumplings and kettle beef were so good, and the dessert was delicious. All the members of the church worked so hard getting the food ready, especially on Sunday when the temperature was 100 degrees. Everything was so well-organized. Congratulations to all the members. Thank all the cooks who prepared the food. They probably grew up in the kitchen baking and cooking. I'm looking forward to the next meal.

Band concerts on TV

I enjoy watching the Cape Girardeau City Council meetings on TV. I never miss them. I also would like to see the municipal band concerts at Capaha Park in the summer. I am homebound and would enjoy the music. If they can televise the council meetings, couldn't they broadcast the concerts? When I was young and the concerts were in Courthouse Park, my friends and I would go there to meet boys and vice-versa. We sat on the ground and enjoyed the music back in the 1940s.

Move 'em out

ATTENTION parents: If you have children who have moved back home and have been there for quite a while, give them two weeks to get out and you will do them a huge favor. You are hurting them to allow them to live at home. This will probably fall on deaf ears. Don't say no one told you.

Finest moment

IF it plays to his political disadvantage, so be it. President Obama clearly stated in an elegant speech that Muslims had a constitutional right to build a mosque two city blocks from Ground Zero. He followed up by saying the wisdom of doing so was another matter entirely. There was no contradiction in his statements. Considering the fact that he didn't have to say anything about the matter and knowing his comments might not be popular, I think it was one of his finest moments.

Fair taxation

A fair federal income tax would soak the idle rich, be fair to the middle class and not cripple the unemployed or the working poor.

Saying no

THOSE who say the Republican Party is the party of no are absolutely right: No, don't desecrate the Constitution. No, don't devalue the institution of marriage by allowing a union between anyone except one man and one woman. No, don't kill the babies. No, don't flood our country with illegals. No, don't tax employers to the point they have no money to hire anyone. No, don't force me to buy anything. No, don't take over companies and give them to labor unions at the expense of secured bondholders. No, don't mess with my 401K or IRA.

Punish bad deeds

THE craziest thing I've seen lately is a flight attendant getting a reality show on TV because of his antics. The FAA needs to get involved and make him pay the cost of deploying the emergency chute if nothing else. Maybe we all should go out and do stupid stuff and get our own reality show and make lots of money. People should be punished, not rewarded, for their bad deeds.
