No smoking

Need an increase

AS a senior citizen I too am concerned about not getting a cost-of-living increase in Social Security benefits. Rates on utilities have increased considerably. My husband and I are trying to pay for supplemental insurance, and it keeps going up. We don't have much savings, but we don't qualify for Medicaid or any other help. We can hardly survive without an increase.

Messy yards

TELL me why Jackson can't see what the town is beginning to look like because people on Bellevue Street are allowed to use their yards as parking lots. There are only three houses on that street where the occupants try to keep their yards up. One of the houses is about to fall down.

School starts

WHY does the school board insist on starting school earlier and earlier every year? This year it starts Aug. 12. Is there really a need to start so soon? Couldn't we wait until after Labor Day?

Illegal ancestors

BRAVO to Jane Ryan for writing "Why aren't we considered good Americans?" I am neither Republican nor Democrat, but I agree entirely with her sentiments. I am an immigrant. My ancestor went AWOL from the British navy in New Brunswick, Canada, in the 1700s. My ancestors were illegal, like a lot of other Americans. I would gladly pay higher taxes so that we all can have good health care. We need to secure the borders and prosecute those who hire illegals instead of judging those hard-working illegals who are trying to make a better life for their families. Yes, there are bad illegals, but there are good and bad in all societies. We need to be more Christ-like and love all, no matter what race, creed or color.

Charity economics

YOUR article "Not-for-profit groups look at their economic effect" claims that they have a combined income of over $30 million. Where does that money come from? It is "drained" out of the balance of the local economy, leaving no net effect economically. Whether that $30 million is better spent by the not-for-profits or by the people who originally earned it can be debated. But the claim that all this money is added to our economy just doesn't hold water.
