Kudos to Jerry Ford for winning Cape's Spirit of America award. Ford has worked for decades, in an always enthusiastic, upbeat and optimistic manner, to improve the community he loves so much. Oppressing

History records that far too often when the oppressed got the power, they, in turn, became the oppressors. We are now seeing evidence that history does repeat itself.

Greek to me

Unbelievable! Austerity measures imposed on Greece have failed miserably to rescue their economy. So, what's the answer? Even stricter austerity measures as well as a possible attempt on the part of the EU and others to force regime change in the recently democratically elected Greek government.

Quite a show

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, citizens of Jackson. First, thank you for your personal fireworks show; my kids love watching it before the City Show. Second, very important point, the City of Jackson needs to give their budget for the fireworks show next year, to the citizen on the west side of the park. That show was better than the city's.

Take a test first

If we had an exam for legislators as rigorous as the one for those wishing to become teachers, the number of those in the Missouri General Assembly would be reduced by 91 percent; all in all, not a bad thing.

World Cup

It's been 16 long years, but the Women's World Cup soccer trophy is coming back to America. What a game!

Festive Fourth

I attended the events at the Arena Park on July Fourth and I just want to say thanks to all those who organized them. The ceremony with the new citizens made me proud to be an American. The pride and gratitude of those who were sworn in was so genuine and honest and moving. Thanks to the Southeast Missourian for organizing the Spirit of America Award. What you do in recognizing a local hero helps make this community a better place. Mr. Ford's remarks were so important, encouraging others to volunteer their time, talents and treasure. That's what makes America great. Special thanks to the City and Mayor Rediger for organizing the fireworks and to Isle Cape Girardeau for providing a lot of the money. I am always proud to be an American, but I was particularly proud to be in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.

Muddy priorities

I read about the mudding party near Poplar Bluff. That's ridiculous. The young lady who was killed. How tragic! But I guess the owner just wants to make his money, forget the safety of those around him, or his neighbors who couldn't drive to their homes. If he attends church, I hope he prays about what's important in life. If that was his own daughter ...

Boom

Great fireworks show at Arena Park! Whoever put that together did an awesome job. Thank you.

Losing weight

Have you noticed how much weight Jason Smith has lost? Wow. He's totally transformed himself. I'm impressed. I wish he could do that to the federal government. Good luck, Rep. Smith.
