Corporate subsidies
YOUR EDITORIAL staff would likely rail against a Small Worker's Association being set up whereby recipients who qualified would receive a direct or indirect government subsidy of some sort. But let it be a Small Business Administration subsidy and it becomes an admirable form of government welfare.
DID I miss something? I thought the Republicans won the last election. Isn't President Bush able to put who he wants on the Supreme Court? Republicans had enough common sense to elect someone with morals and standards. Maybe if the Democrats could prove they stand for something they would get elected. However, trying to be all things to all people will get you nothing. Democrats should stop whining. They lost.
I HAVE to disagree with the person who said we have to look at everyone as a potential terror threat. I have never heard an 80-year-old woman blowing up anything. Officials need to concentrate on the main group of people who have done these things in the past and not worry about political correctness or so-called racial profiling. If a dog is knocking over your trash cans, do you run off all the cats in the area?
ABOUT ALL one can sensibly say about the proposed expansion of daylight-saving time can be summed up in one word, especially considering the admissions that no one can really say how much (if any) energy would be saved: Baloney!
WITH A new superintendent and two new board members, there was hope within the Cape Girardeau School District that finally things were going to improve. We are told that there is no money for textbooks, but we are considering a football stadium for four or five home games? Cape Girardeau used to be one of the most respected school districts in Missouri. Now we are a joke.
WHAT IS it with Cape Girardeau? The city has no respect for tradition. Southeast Missouri State University just had to change from the Indians to the Redhawks, and Central High School wants a new football field. Shame on you. Keep some traditions alive. The high school team is not too good to play at Houck Stadium. We are not like St. Louis and other big cities. We don't need a stadium for every sport and every school. If Cape had more than one high school, maybe we would. But until that happens, save some money for books and other supplies and be happy with what we have.
I would like to commend officer Sievers of the Jackson Police Department for his handling of a situation with a juvenile at our house. He was very proficient. He did a good job.
WE'RE A funny bunch of people. We're always moaning and groaning about jobs going overseas. But when an American company tries to put in a power plant or cement plant or a railroad track to expand, we all jump up and down and holler "Not in my neighborhood." How do we expect to keep jobs here if we don't back our own companies?
