Self-destruction

IT occurs to me that if the government gets the power to pay for all our health care, it will also have the power to not pay for those who smoke, are obese, refuse to exercise and use illegal drugs. Why spend government money on people who are self-destructive?

Don't buy it

CAPE Girardeau County does not need to buy the old federal building in Cape Girardeau. Jackson is the county seat, and our county needs to put its money in areas where it is needed. The county commission is holding a public meeting, but guess what? It is during the week in the morning. We who work cannot attend. Taxpayers, make your opinions on this subject known. The buying of this building is not needed.

Sharing the road

IT was with some fear that I started to ride my bicycle 12 miles into work in April. I have read comments by drivers cursing cyclists and comments by cyclists cursing drivers. I have experienced frustration as a motorist unable to pass a cyclist on a blind hill and the fear of a cyclist having a car pass only inches from my side at 50 mph. I believe there is room on the road for us both. I would like to say that I have been impressed by how courteous drivers have treated me as I struggle through the process of getting skill, strength and speed into my cycling. I always try to wave a hand in thanks whenever a motorist goes out of their way to give me a little space on the road. My experience with drivers in the area has only been positive. My thanks to all drivers.

Bad cartoon

SHAME on you, Southeast Missourian. You printed a political cartoon showing a person being denied health care because of lack of insurance or ability to pay. You know this breaks the law. Our hospitals and doctors post signs indicating that treatment is available regardless of financial condition or lack of insurance.
