Christian nation

THE biggest problem with our society is that it's secular based on the principles of the world's religions. This country was founded on the tenets of Christianity. If you want to practice your religion, you are certainly allowed to do so. But if the laws of this land should be based on any religion it should be the same as when this country was founded, Christianity. If you want to be a follower of any other religion, that is your free choice. But this is a Christian nation. We should be prepared to defend this, because if we lose it, this country is lost.

Idle complaints

THE Veterans USA organization put on a fireworks show at its own expense. It went to lots of trouble to provide this free to the community. Yet some people have complained about the most petty things. One person says the fireworks started late. Another says they lasted too long. Good gracious, but some of you folks are an embarrassment.

Top demagogues

THE top five most influential, divisive, fear-mongering demagogues are 5. Michael Savage (could be No. 1 but is lesser known), 4. Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann (believes Congress is filled with anti-American members), 3. Sarah Palin (accurately described as Joe McCarthy-lite), 2. Rush Limbaugh (still spewing vitriol after all these years), 1. Glenn Beck (best at faking Hitlerian psychoses). Sean Hannity has dropped out of the top five because his phony anger and good looks are fading.

Casino benefits

FOR the people against a casino in Cape Girardeau, you need to be ashamed. Do you not realize how much it would improve downtown, not to mention all the jobs and tax dollars it will bring to Cape Girardeau? If people want to go to a casino, they will regardless of how far away it is. Every person who leaves Cape Girardeau to go to a casino some place else is taking money out of the city's pocket. Bring jobs and tax dollars to Cape. When we vote, I think it will pass overwhelmingly.

Protecting borders

THE AP article "Man with neo-Nazi ties leading patrols in Arizona" was informative but misleading. Since our federal government has placed no priority on protecting the borders of America, it is not surprising that different groups are taking the opportunity to lend a hand. But it is offensive to make it seem as if it is only the neo-Nazis and they are there to kill and maim those crossing illegally. Most groups have compassion in knowing these people want a better life, but crossing illegally is not going to provide that. The dangers of crossing the desert, along with the human smugglers who have no concern with the human cost, are great.

Reagan's history

SOME people are revising the history of Ronald Reagan's presidency. Reagan raised taxes. He only spoke of lowering them. This is not the only contradictory thing he did. Remember this before canonizing him, please.

City campaigning

IF the mayor and city manager in their official positions can campaign for the Transportation Trust Fund 4 tax, why can't other city employees campaign against it? The mayor and city manager don't represent me. I'm against the tax.

Police pay

MOST of the good citizens of Cape Girardeau do not know what kind of danger police officers are putting themselves in every day. I had a son who was on the police force and left for better pay. Whatever they can get paid, raise salaries. Let's get on with protecting our town as it should be protected.

Casino property

I find it interesting that the city didn't give a liquor license to the bar on North Main Street. Casino interests are buying all that property. If the bar is not functioning, the value of the property will be greatly diminished.
