Counterproductive

CUTTING the deficit and debt at a time when we're attempting to recover from the greatest economic downturn since the Depression is counterproductive and would add further credence to the view that we are doomed.

Infrastructure bank

PRESIDENT Obama wants to set up an infrastructure bank. It would put hundreds of thousands of people back to work again. Republican obstructionists will prevent it. Thus, to make a Speak Out comment published about a local matter take on national importance, our whole country will continue to go to potholes.

Retire Obama

WHEN President Obama was questioned regarding the nearly 75 percent of Americans who oppose a debt ceiling increase, did I hear President Obama imply that the average American didn't have enough sense to make that decision? Well, I know a decision I can make. Retire the pompous fool.

Loopholes

SELECTIVELY closing tax loopholes would be unfair. We need to close all tax loopholes. That would include all deductions, exemptions and tax credits. And we also have the bottom 40 percent income bracket that pays no income tax. That 40 percent is a tax loophole.

Not-for-profit hospitals

I wonder if anybody has seen anything like we're seeing in Cape Girardeau where supposedly not-for-profit hospitals don't make any profit from the high charges and yet they are expanding and they can't help but spend money everywhere. How a not-for-profit is able to spend so much money and not make a profit is difficult to understand. It might be because they are always saving to spend more and charge you more.

Demagogue

NOBODY knows the exact meanings of words. They need a dictionary to know the exact meanings of words. A demagogue is someone who influences the political system for political gain.

Abortion

MOTHERS get away with murdering their young every day. We call it abortion.

Dutchtown trash

THIS is for the person who owns the trailer and trash in the east end of Dutchtown. I don't live in Dutchtown, but I drive by it when I go to Cape Girardeau. That is the most ridiculous site of trash. And it has given Dutchtown a bad name as being a trashy town. I don't know why the owner doesn't clean it up.

Pfister's sandwich

THIS is to the person who wanted to know about Pfister's sandwich. It was a pimento cheese on French bread. And I too was a fan of that particular sandwich.

Learn to budget

TO Washington: You are the ones putting us in debt by giving large amounts of money to foreign countries. By having a war you are going in debt to have that we cannot afford. Why punish Social Security and Medicaid recipients? Cut your spending. Don't you know how to budget? If you don't, you need to get out. Let someone in that does know not to spend what you don't have. People have had enough.

Childish behavior

I play slow-pitch softball in Cape Girardeau's league out at Shawnee Park, and it is absolutely embarrassing how childish how some of the players behave out at the field during the game. It's ridiculous.

Benefits cut

SOME Americans are against the Americans who make more than $250,000 a year to not have their taxes increased. Yet I am a senior citizen who worked hard all my life, but my Social Security income was cut $51 per month. I have paid into Social Security all my many years that I worked, but my actual benefits were cut. Why is that?
