Doing their jobs
I KNOW Sgt. Kevin Orr. I am a minority. No racial slurs would ever come out of his mouth. I commend the officers involved in the incident on Hanover Street. They were doing their jobs and trying to keep the peace. They got injured doing it. Some people have no respect for the law or authority. Anytime things don't go their way they cry about it. People need to let the officers do their jobs. Way to go, Cape Girardeau Police Department.
"THE TERRORISTS in Iraq today have been drawn there as a result of our occupation," said a recent Speak Out caller. Good for them. I would rather have those terrorists in Iraq rather than Cape Girardeau. The war in Iraq also keeps the terrorists busy and will eventually result in their deaths.
I LIVE in a apartment complex. I had a stroke a few years back and am limited in what I can do. My screen door was hard to open. The people who own the property would never fix it. One day I met a man who lived in the same complex who said he would fix it. Now I can open the door easily. I asked the landlord six months ago if he would fix it, and he told me that if I didn't like it I could move. I am stuck here with this disability. People need to check out the landlords before they move into a place.
SINCE THE city is almost done with the sidewalks on Lexington Avenue, would it please put sidewalks on Perryville Road from the cemetery out to Cape Rock Drive?
IF YOU go on I-55 to Fruitland, there are no plastic bags in the fence rows. Yes, there are people who are still littering, but it's nothing like it was this spring. The littering was horrendous. On county roads numerous groups and individuals have picked up litter.
I THINK it's important that Sandra Day O'Connor be replaced with another woman. I would encourage all women to call the White House to see that a woman is put back on the Supreme Court. There are enough men already. O'Connor was a credit to the Supreme Court.
IS IT any wonder that there are disturbances on Hanover Street? Drive slowly through that area and you will be surprised at the guys who run out to the street and want to know if I want to buy some crack. The police chief ought to drive through there once in a while himself. No wonder residents in that area feel like they're above the law. The law will let them sell crack right on the street and let prostitution take place. Why shouldn't they shoot fireworks? It's time the police stepped up to do their job. If it's a drug area, why don't the police stop it?
I CERTAINLY hope that the rest of the design of the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge isn't as sloppy as the light system. If the highway department can't design anything better than that, it had better get some other engineers. That is bad.
I'VE LIVED in Cape Girardeau almost all of my adult life. I'm almost old as dirt, but I get tired of our town being griped about continuously by those who are concerned about the police department, the street department, the waste service, the city council, the school system, roundabouts, potholes, dogs, cats and a thousand other things we do or don't have. When I got back from overseas, this town sure looked good to me, and it still does. We're always going to have aggravating problems, but thank God you live in a city that's not perfect but isn't too bad to call home with a lot of caring people who help others and go out of their way to help the city and its citizens.
