Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed a bill passed by the Republican-controlled legislature that would have allowed Missourians to carry a concealed weapon without a permit, training and a background check. Though crime rates remain at historic lows, one area legislator who supported the bill demagogically declared that these are extraordinarily dangerous times. Bills like this make the job of our law enforcement officers much more difficult. If the legislature overrides the governor's veto later this year, those who vote to do so will have blood on their hands. How very sad and shameless an example of putting politics above the safety of the people.
The Cape Elks Club had a golf tournament June 18 at the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course. We would like to thank Randy Luders and his crew for a job well done. The course is in great condition and looks wonderful. Also, we would like to thank Adam Halter and his crew of marshals and other workers for all of their help.
Ninety percent of Americans want military-grade weapons, clips and ammo banned. Eighty-seven percent want expanded background checks, and 94 percent want those on the no-fly list not to be able to purchase any weapon at all. The Democrats are listening to the people and the Republicans are listening to their pocketbooks with the NRA. Keep the representatives that are listening to the people and send home those that only listen to lobbyist and their money.
Much more important than the Brexit result would be the result of an area referendum on whether to keep or get rid of Speak Out.
