REGARDING the mailboxes in the middle of the sidewalks on Mount Auburn Road: All it takes is one disabled person in a wheelchair to make a discrimination complaint with the state, and the mailboxes would all have to be knocked down. Wheelchairs can't get around them. Where a sidewalk I needed is from Cape Rock Drive down Perryville Road to the park so people don't have to walk in the street.
I have no doubt whatsoever that the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course's new look will be stunning. At the same time, I am convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that there's absolutely nothing the city could do to make it in any way comparable to the beauty of Cape Girardeau's downtown golf course.
ABOUT the proposed casino: A recent comment said high-paying jobs would come with it, but where's the proof, the statistics, the bottom-line numbers that it really will benefit anyone but the people leasing the land and a handful of others? Why not put it to a vote? Is the city government afraid of the true feelings on this matter?
THOSE who want Grandma and Grandpa to plant flowers and read books instead of gamble are sadists who say the elderly haven't earned the right to have some real fun.
SOUTHEAST Missouri State University finance professor Mike Devaney represents what might be called Rational Economic Man. He believes that if area parents of dumb children realized Southeast catered to smart children they would make a calm and rational decision to send their children elsewhere. In the real world of often irrational behavior by human beings, area parents of the less gifted who aspired to a four-year degree at Southeast would rage against Devaney's suggested model, blame Southeast for absurdly attempting to become the Harvard of the Midwest, hang in effigy all responsible for implementing the Devaney model and organize an international boycott that would cripple Southeast Missouri State University until the commonsense philosophy of unreason returned as its guiding philosophy.
IT is funny how fast Republicans forget. This mess the U.S. is in took eight years to create, but they think President Obama should have fixed it the minute he took office. President Bush took us into war with Iraq and spent all this money on Iraqis, which created the deficit we now have. President Bush did not concentrate on the American people, which should be our president's priority. Bush created this debt. Now Republicans want the Democratic president to get us out of the mess they created.
I grew up in Cape Girardeau but moved away when I was 18, leaving home like so many do. But I've always loved Cape. I was just there for another family reunion. Upon touring the city, I saw way too many older homes in a state of deterioration all over the older areas. And Broadway going down to the river is awful. I was shocked. It has been getting worse and worse each time I go back. I sure don't have any solutions, but perhaps some outstanding leadership efforts could get the community motivated to turn things around. It could be a campaign headed up by the mayor and his team. It appears the city has no pride. Yet there are newer areas that are nice. As Cape is now, so many areas are miserably deteriorated. I would think they attract the kind of folks who don't make for a safe and thriving community. Cape has so many good features that it's a shame not to capitalize on them. Broadway and downtown need to house upscale, classy shops and businesses and highlight historical features.
NATIONAL polls of Republicans, Democrats, independents and others show overwhelming support for the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell." The only ones who are against the repeal seem to be Republicans in Congress.
THE recent comment about President Obama setting all kinds of bad records was notable and perhaps record-setting in its own right for its inaccuracy, length and tedium.
SO a combat veteran wouldn't approve of spending money on fireworks. Everyone is entitled to his opinion. The veterans in question chose to spend their money on fireworks. That doesn't make it a sad day.
