Thank you for printing the honor rolls of the schools in the paper.
This is just a big shout-out to Cape Girardeau. The Great Race event downtown was nicely organized.
For making it such a fun-filled and family-friendly experience, kudos to Amy Roth and her caring and hardworking staff at Cape Splash.
As his summary of information obtained from the largely political reading he has been doing, there is no doubt that Gary Rust has fallen prey to what is called the confirmation bias. This is very common. People generally tend to read or watch on TV those things that reinforce, but in no way challenge, their already preconceived notions and opinions. Fortunately, there is an easy cure for this affliction. Expose yourself to views other than those you already have. For example, in Gary Rust's case, I would recommend that he read "The Shock Doctrine" by Naomi Klein, "The Untold History of the United States" by Oliver Stone, "Simpler Government" by Cass Sunstein, "End This Depression Now" by Paul Krugman, and on TV watch All in With Chris Hayes, Lawrence O'Donnell and, of course, Rachel Maddow.
The defeat of the farm bill by Congress is in part a tea party response to many heartland farmers who are, ironically, tea party stalwarts.
Cape is not only figuratively but literally sinking. Over the decades, I've seen us slide from the City of Roses to the City of Sinkholes.
Anyone who thinks it's a good idea to replace income tax with a consumption tax probably has no money. I've worked hard, paid income taxes and saved my entire life. And now, tea partiers and so-called libertarians suggest I pay a higher tax on my savings again when spending it? No thanks.
The Cape Girardeau school system is going to miss a great coach in Coach McDowell. He been a very positive coach at Cape Central High School for the past five years, and I expect him to work as hard and get the same great results at his new school Winfield. And on another note, Cape Central is getting another great coach in Coach Kitchen. Good Luck to both coaches in their new positions.
