Games on radio

ON BEHALF of all Capahas baseball fans, I just wanted to thank Mark Rhodes and Plaza Tire for sponsoring the games on the radio. We appreciate it.

Moral religion

AS I sit here with my loving husband on my front porch this beautiful Saturday morning with my cup of coffee and reading the newspaper, I read the David Limbaugh column "Faithland sojourn." It ruined this beautiful morning I was having. It has been apparent that Limbaugh thinks and believes that Christianity is the only moral religion in the United States. I have been a Christian and attended church on a regular basis all my 51 years of life. I know Jewish and Muslim families in my neighborhood and would entrust them to take care of my children before entrusting them to Limbaugh.

Too many signs

JACKSON HAS all these ordinances about signs. Businesses cannot have temporary signs, but at one of the busiest intersections in town, at the post office, anyone can stick a sign in the ground. It is really an eyesore. The signs hold up traffic because people sit there and write down addresses for garage sales.

On death row

THE DEATH penalty was reinstated. Gov. Matt Blunt and Attorney General Jay Nixon don't know what it's like to have a person on death row. They need to think about all the people who are on death row and are innocent.

Religious intolerance

I'M GETTING tired of David Limbaugh espousing the fact that he believes Democrats have no Christian values and are not Christians. We want an end to killing. To me, that is a Christian value. This is a political war, not a Christian war. Limbaugh has no right to tell people what religion they should be. You have no right to tell people that they are not Christian.

Low-cost alternative

I AM thoroughly confused. Why would anybody with a good brain fight getting a community college? My granddaughter cannot afford Southeast Missouri State University, but she would love to get a higher education. She does not have a car good enough to drive elsewhere. The price of gasoline is a factor. School loans put you deep in debt before you even have a chance to get a good start in life, so that is out. She works hard and has a good work ethic. She gets no help from her parents. Have some compassion on the poorer students.

Thanks for purse

THANKS SO much to the Chaffee couple who returned my purse at the grocery store. I truly appreciate it. Thanks.

No water park

I THINK you should vote no on the sales tax. Water parks are a lot more expensive than going to a swimming pool. Can we afford that? Children are the ones who are going to suffer from this decision. Water parks are also large, and parents should accompany their children, especially if they're young. Does your family play golf? Mine doesn't. We'll be giving the rich guys a golf course. The city, of course, would use the tax the way it wants. We live on a fixed income. I'm for the water system and the park and the swimming pool, but not a water park.

Avoiding the shock

I AM a fairly intelligent, law-abiding citizen. When, on occasion, I would be shocked from a light switch, I would jerk my hand away. I have a question. When the police Tasers an individual the first time, wouldn't you think that the suspect would resist and want the electrical shocks to stop? Are they calling this resisting so they Taser them again, risking permanent damage or death?

Promises not kept

I VOTED for the library tax. I voted for the public safety tax. So far, those promises have not been kept. The firefighters aren't getting what they were promised. As long as I live in Cape Girardeau, I will never vote for another tax increase for Cape.

Not up to taxpayers

TO ALL you people calling Speak Out about a water park: Why don't you get together and build one? Why do you always expect the taxpayers to provide entertainment for your children? If you choose to drive to Farmington, that is your choice. I go to St. Louis to attend events, and that is my choice. However, I don't expect Cape Girardeau to build buildings and provide the same events for my entertainment.

Seaman's plight

I JUST read the article about Justin Burns and the reasons he gave for leaving the Navy. Justin sounds like an intelligent young man who tried hard to do the right thing but received no help from Navy officers. Being told by the master chief on his ship to take his family to a homeless shelter every night is a disgrace. This young man was in a dire predicament and tried to do everything on his own to help his wife and child. God bless him for that. No one should judge him. He needs help for his family.

Enough taxes

AREN'T WE paying enough taxes in Cape Girardeau? Why can't the city council quit raising taxes? Some of us are on a fixed income. What are you trying to do? Take our houses away from us? It seems like that's what you're trying to do. We didn't need that library tax. Now you're going to raise our taxes again? You try living on $600 a month and see how you like it.
