IF Dr. Welker and the school board get "creative" on Dr. Welker's retirement, how can we trust their prudence and honesty on other matters? If Dr. Welker can't handle his personal finances, how can he and the board handle a million-dollar-plus budget? Can we have confidence in them on the bond issue, the building projects, destroying Franklin School, or other matters? Frankly, my confidence in them is questionable.
I thought the rock show was first class at the Show Me Center recently. We moved here 16 years ago from a larger city and didn't have as many concerts as Cape Girardeau. Please keep the Show Me Center rocking.
I think it's ridiculous to breach a levee in Missouri and flood thousands and thousands of acres of farmland just to protect Cairo. If Cairo did flood and wash completely away, I think all it would do is cause hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of improvements.
I'M starting to see a lot on TV about why so many kids are raised by single parents. If you want to get really honest about this, the main reason is because of the welfare system. Kids can have kids out of wedlock, and they'll get a child support payment. They may get Medicaid and they may get other goodies. If they have two or three, they get a pretty good paycheck.
I don't think Speaker of the House Steven Tilley's apologies about what he said about the city of Cairo were sincere. It's pretty simple -- people or land -- and he joked about the city of Cairo. I live in Missouri, but I grew up in Cairo. I don't think it was very funny.
AFTER this past week of terrible storms, I am reminded of one thing -- God is still on the throne, God is still in control.
THERE are many places flooding right now that have not flooded like this before, and those people need our help really badly. But this comment is about the places that flood regularly and the FEMA checks that the people who live there get every time. If people are living in flood plains, then they need to either take responsibility for themselves or move. I don't think that we should be paying them each time their homes are flooded.
WHEN our family was in a financial crisis, we had to cut the fluff out of our budget. For 10 years we did not take a vacation. No movies, no cable TV, no new clothes, no beauty shop or barbershop, and we ate cheap food. We continued to pay our mortgage, our health insurance and our life insurance. We avoided bankruptcy, paid off our credit and got out of debt. President Obama is the head of our U.S. household, so to speak. He has not cut out any of the fluff.
