Trump Age

The nature of our government in the Age of Trump will most certainly change from a representative democracy to some form of authoritarian dictatorship. I'm guessing that our nation's government will most resemble that of Francisco Franco's long-lasting Spanish-style fascism.

Neighborhood watch

I'm in love the Nextdoor social media site and app. It's be really useful to our neighborhood in Cape LaCroix. It's the new neighborhood watch program. Love it.

Place for police

I wonder if the city has thought about building the new police station in the area where the trees were cut down a few years ago to allow for more fair parking. The old Naval Reserve property (with a large, lighted, concrete parking lot) could be used for fair parking and the building for an agriculture expo.

Mr. Clippard

Charles C. Clippard was the best principal in the history of Cape Girardeau public schools. Hawthorne School (later changed to Charles C. Clippard School) opened 50 years ago, with Mr. Clippard as principal. It has been in "Out of the Past" twice this year. I've contacted school personnel and they have no intention of acknowledging nor celebrating this milestone. What a shame! Mr. Clippard, you treated students and teachers with the utmost respect. Thank you! You were the best!

Implosion imminent

An online assertion that the current Republican controlled Congress (114th) is the worse than the 112th, making it the worst Congress in U. S. history, is correct. Evidence ranges from the lack of the approval of a budget, any action on appropriations, refusal to even hold a hearing on the next U.S. Supreme Court nomination, failure to act on a huge backlog of other federal appointments, the Zika virus, Flint's brain damaging water, opioid crises and on and on. Inaction will eventually lead to the implosion of the republic.

Roundabout payoff

I agree with the Southeast Missourian editorial board that Jackson's new roundabout will eventually pay big dividends. According to the data I entered in my computer, the payoff should begin occurring in or around 2413.

Right to vote

It is sad that Miss Ross believes it is a good idea that Americans should give up their right to vote.

Social engineering

As I approach my mid-80s, it is fascinating to observe my country becoming the Soviet Union of my youth. For example, the government provides day care for children so their mothers can work, the government tells businesses and corporations whom they can hire, whom they can fire and now even how much they must pay their employees. More and more religious freedom is being limited to within the walls of the religious institutions, but does not extend beyond the walls of those institutions into the public arena. Social engineering by those in power extends into every aspect of our daily lives.
