I have never in my 73 years seen the begging that's going on today. You cannot tell me that all of a sudden none of these families can take care of themselves or their children. Since when is it the school's responsibility to feed families and children? Where's the backbone of these men who have families? I know some of them are out of work through no fault of their own, but there's still a lot of them working and expecting a handout every week.
WHY do people think a casino would be a benefit to Cape Girardeau instead of a detriment? People are addicted to texting, video games, television, alcohol and drinking coffee. Why does anyone think people won't become addicted to gambling? A casino would not benefit the community in any way.
I cannot believe the number of people who think a stop sign means "It probably would be a good idea for you to slow down before you roll on through" or a yellow light means "Speed up and go as fast as you can." What astounds me even more is that there can be police who see this and don't do a thing. Why aren't they enforcing traffic laws? My husband asked me why I didn't go one day when the light turned green. I didn't go because it can be a death warrant in Cape Girardeau to pull out the instant the light turns green. The lights are there to be obeyed. The signs are there to be obeyed. Don't roll on through.
SINCE Paul Nenninger has been on the Cape Girardeau School Board, several key administrative positions have been filled by people who send their children to area Catholic schools. While everyone has the right to send their children wherever they want, the problems are obvious. One, it is difficult for anyone to believe an administrator who says the school they supervise is the best when they choose another school for their children. I'm sure they want the best for their children, so their actions contradict their words. Second, they have no vested interest in the school where they work. In fact, their interest is in a "competitor." The Cape Girardeau School District should have a policy, like some other districts, that children of administrators attend the public schools.
I was in the waiting room at the doctor's office several boys came in accompanied by two women. The noise level rose tremendously, as the boys were talking loudly. Even the two women were loud. These boys were Boy Scouts getting physicals to attend summer camp. I was disappointed to see these boys acting so rudely. I really thought Boy Scouts were taught better manners than that. The two women should have had more sense, but they were as bad as the boys.
WITH the phenomenal growth of independent voters, Missouri and other states need open primary elections. This would allow voters to choose among either major or independent party candidates. The two highest vote getters would then square off in the general election. If there is an issue that unites the far left and right, it is opposition to the idea of an open primary. Why? Because a closed primary allows either major political party's activist base to have influence far beyond their numbers, and voters are often left in the general election with a choice among candidates whose views are more extreme than those held by the sensible center and the majority of voters. That is why I am going to spend a lot of time traveling the state getting signatures on petitions to allow voters to decide whether we would be better served by an open primary.
