Parking-lot angels

SATURDAY I met an angel as I was getting out of my car at the J.C. Penney parking lot. A young woman by the name of Katie helped me with my walker and a large bag I was carrying. She took me right to the place where I had to return it. She was an absolute angel. After I did my return, she was looking for me to help me back out to my car. There was a man who came to help me when my rearview mirror fell out of my car. I met two angels in one day. Thank you.

Keep pets at home

LETTING YOUR cat out to breed and kill small animals is ridiculous. Domestic cats are not native to America. To have a predator introduced uncontrolled over years and years has had a sad ending for many species. Keep your pets at home as pets, not predators. Pets don't know any better, but people should.

War's duration

WE HAVE heard so much about the Iraq war now in its fourth year -- longer than World War I or World War II. How long were our troops in countries like Germany and Italy after those wars ended?

Graduation review

MY FAMILY went to the Southeast Missouri State University's graduation. There were beautiful flowers and a wonderful singer. The speaker was outstanding. But it was a trying experience to get from our cars to the building. There was a long walk up the hill on gravel. That was hard on the grandmothers in our group. There was a repeat of the honors held that morning. Then there were the 20 alumni with grades of 4.0 and the whole history of the university. It makes you wonder if the students are getting that much smarter, or is the faculty becoming brain dead and can't tell what is excellent work. This really made us wonder about the change.

Government plan

I THINK it is quite evident in this country that we have poor government. When it come to health care, I keep checking my records again and again, and I find out that of 19 major industrial countries, we spend 50 percent more for health care than the rest of them. It is silliness to say our government can't do what the rest of them do.

Buckled-up street

IF CITY officials would take a drive on Kenneth Avenue, they would find that a huge chunk of concrete has buckled up. Maybe they could fix it before we ruin our tires and vehicles.

Cut and run

DEMOCRATS KEEP saying we should cut and run from Iraq. One person said the Republicans would join the Democrats in giving up. I believe we have lost this war on terrorism just as we have lost the war on immigration. I believe we should get ready to lose a major city in the United States. The blame will clearly be on the backs of Democrats who voted for us to go to war and voted for us to send troops and now want us to cut and run like we did in Vietnam.

Altered pets

I RECENTLY paid $50 for a dog from the Humane Society's animal shelter. The dog had to be altered, and a chip was put in his ear. Adopted animals have to have their first shots. I can't see a how family could afford to adopt an animal there. Some people do not want their animal altered. I guess it comes to accepting responsibility.

Tough decision

I WAS glad to see the Southeast Missourian print the other side of the abortion issue. I felt the parents made the right decision for them. I think it is a shame when someone takes such an approach to kill their unborn children. This is being narrowed-minded. This is something that they have to live with for the rest of their life.

County needs jobs

I DON'T care who has money invested in Scott County's proposed ethanol plants. They will bring jobs to Scott County. Scott County is a poor county, and we need the jobs and the tax basis it will bring to our schools.

Get it done

EVERY ONCE in a while I hear someone suggesting a Manhattan Project-type of action on the gasoline problem. Most people realize what the Manhattan Project did. I had a friend who was an engineer in World War II. He told me about a plane that had a problem in the middle of Texas. A three-star general came to the airport. The lieutenant colonel that was in charge of that group of engineers went over to the general's plane and said "Manhattan Project." That is all they had to do to cut through the red tape. The general had to sit there while the crew of engineers went on to their destination. This is the way it should be done. Cut out all the red tape and dig in and get it done.

Drinking favors

MY DAUGHTER attended prom and came home with her prom favor. She received a champagne flute with the theme of the prom inscribed on it. Her date got a glass beer mug. I was talking about this to some parents whose children go to other schools, and every school that we know had favors that had to do with alcohol. What kind of message are you sending these children? You tell them all along don't drink, don't drink. Then on prom night you tell them don't drink and give them a party favor that deals with drinking. I went online to see what other options are available, and I saw online catalogs for prom night favors. There are all kinds of party favors that don't pertain to drinking,
