Health assessment

I know the ins and outs of self assessment. For Cape's two hospitals to collectively engage in this process will only serve to whitewash any glaring problems and perpetuate the overly high cost to consumers of health care resulting from this duopoly.

Teacher salaries

Kudos to the Cape Public Schools Community Teachers Association [CTA] for calling in a Missouri State Teacher's Association [MSTA] salary expert to look over the books and see if it is justified for Cape's public school teachers to consistently earn lesser salaries than those teachers in similar areas and statewide school districts. However, a word of caution. School district administrative personnel also are members of MSTA and have the potential to dominate MSTA officials. CTA officers and teachers educated at least to some degree in school finance should monitor the situation very closely.

Teacher test

The Missouri General Assembly is mandating a more difficult general knowledge test for prospective teachers, a test, I have no doubt, would result in a flat F grade if taken by the proudly-strutting-peacock-know-nothing Republicans who voted to require the test.

Gun safety

Another senseless gun killing happened recently. This is at least the third time this year a young child, in this case a five year old Kentucky boy, pointed a gun at someone and pulled the trigger, killing them. Gun regulation means gun safety. Keeping a loaded gun in an accessible place for an unsupervised child should be a crime.

Incorporate Fruitland

Please, Jackson, incorporate Fruitland. It's nonsensical that it's not. It's on the highway; the Jackson sign is pretty far out there and we want protection. The people don't realize how far the boundaries for the school district goes. It goes all the way to Cape Girardeau on Route 177. Stop the nonsense. Jackson's a big area for children to go to school. Incorporate Fruitland now. It's a shame the rules are so stringent for incorporation. Most people who live there want incorporation.

Love and prayer

I read the Speak Out about terrorism. I wonder if the person who blamed Bush on the Boston bombing, 9/11 and the terrorists attacks have ever heard of al-Qaida? The radical Muslims bombed our embassies and the USS Cole. Christ teaches to love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

No more aid

I can't believe I'm saying this as a Democrat. I don't want to see the U.S. give any aid to Syria. No good will come of it. If we do, they will do nothing but complain about one thing or another.

More sirens

Tornado season is here. Now the mayor and city council should rush the order for more sirens around the city.

Great athletes

The runners at the Boston Marathon are an elite group of very fast runners. In order to even run, you have to qualify at a smaller marathon. The people who qualified for the Boston Marathon from the area are extremely good athletes.
