As a parent of two children in the Cape Girardeau school system, I am highly upset about this uniform situation. What upsets me the most is that many of these deals were made with no prior knowledge of most parents. I plan to look into homeschooling and other forms of educating my children in an environment that will allow them to be creative individuals and be able to learn to question, to think for themselves and to use deductive reasoning in order to accomplish the goals of their lives.
Missouri voters will have a chance later this year to remove the embarrassing stigma of being the state that has the lowest cigarette tax. Although similar efforts have failed in the past, I have a feeling that this one will succeed. Passage of the proposed tax will naturally be a big benefit to our public health.
Racial divide
Is the Speak Out caller serious? The only reason that the racial divide persists is because Rush Limbaugh perpetuates it? Excuse me, I guess the Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson do nothing to perpetuate it. This caller is hilarious.
No smoking ban in restaurants. What is it with our city officials who want to force government and their personal beliefs down the throats of the people of Cape Girardeau? We voted no to a smoking ban, and I will do my part to vote these people out of office. The American Cancer Society has wasted enough of its money (our donations) on this issue as well.
A comment about food stamps and stirring the pot. I watched a lady pay for her groceries and those of the guy behind her, then he paid her cash for the groceries.
Smokers' rights?
A smoker's rights stop when their smoke enters my lungs. If a nonsmoker has already taken a seat at an outdoor event like music or a ballgame, don't be a donkey and sit down next to them puffing on your cancer stick. Ask if the smoke will bother them. If the answer is yes, then move on or wait to smoke later.
