SOUTHEAST Missouri's students are finishing up the MAP test once again, so in a few months we'll hear another uproar about school performance. Schools should not be the only responsible party for these results. Parents are big factors. Since policy soon will require all students to perform at the proficient level, parents with students who score less than proficient should pay a tax, just like those who don't buy health insurance will. Or is that the insurance salesman's responsibility?...

Taxing grades

Downhill slope

OUR country is going downhill rapidly. Look in the April 18 edition of the Southeast Missourian. What kind of future are our children facing when our supposedly future leaders are running through the streets seminude and everyone thinks it's OK because it's for charity? Is this what Southeast Missouri State University Instructors teach? I believe it is.

Trash reading

IS there a class for adults who cannot read? There are households where the occupants obviously cannot read. As I traveled in one area, there were houses that had the new trash cans out to be picked up, some overflowing. I assume these individuals are incapable of reading the flier that was attached to the trash cans.

Ignored suggestions

I'M the parent who is sending my children to private school due to the recent passage of the bond issue. I've served, by request of the district, on three of the district's community input groups and have seen the same parent and community comments and suggestions offered for the past 10 years. Each time, we're told by the board that the suggestions and comments are excellent, yet they're never acted on. I've been an all-school booster club member for more than 10 years and have served as an officer of that club and two PTAs. I've been a room mother every year and have volunteered in every school my children have been in. I do not complain about the schools to others. But I do know this district. My husband and I are once-proud graduates of Central High School who have become disillusioned and disgusted. We are not alone, and we are justified in our feelings. We have done all we can to support this school but have been watching the deceit and are giving up. Our children deserve better than this.
