Weird news

I love your Sunday "news of the weird" articles. It's the first thing I look for on Sundays to bring a smile to my face, and I miss it on the Sundays you don't put it in. Keep up the good work.

Good times

THE reason for President Clinton's surplus in the 1990s was because the Republican Congress held his feet to the fire. If he had a Democratic Congress, the sky would have been the limit on spending. The reason for good economic times in the 1990s was because of President Reagan's research and development in the 1980s.

Good education

A good education for all students at all levels is a panacea for our country's future ills. Young students need encouragement from their parents. They need to taught self-discipline. Teachers need to encourage and support their students. Let's quit saying "It's the economy, stupid" and institute a federal economic agency, a separate part of federal government to resolve economic problems.

Picking up trash

I would like to thank whoever picked up trash on I-55 between Center Junction and Route K. You did a great job. It's a shame people can't keep their trash in their car until they can dispose of it properly. Thank you for a good job.

No malingering

AS a lifelong resident, taxpayer and supporter of the Cape Girardeau School District, I would encourage the parent who said she was going to send her children to a private school to do so. Cape Girardeau and the school district need conscientious citizens and supporters who want to contribute to the improvement and success of this city and the schools. What we don't need are the malingerers who offer no constructive criticism, suggestions or implementations for improvement.

More volume

I attended the musical "The Sound of Music" put on by Notre Dame Regional High School. The students did an excellent job, but I have a suggestion. I hope next year all of the performers will have microphones. It was hard to hear them, especially if you were seated in the back of the auditorium.

Tainted profit

TO the person who ripped off the brass items from the charitable organization's garage sale, remember every penny of profit that you make from the resale of those items is tainted. I'm praying for you.

Recycle trash can

CAPE Girardeau residents are going to throw away a lot of trash cans in a couple of weeks. If you can is in good shape, why not call friends who don't live here to see if they can use your can?

Not liberal enough

A conservative caller recently left a message here saying that the majority of the American public opposed the passing of our recent health care bill. That's right, but the bill was opposed mostly because it wasn't liberal enough.

Triumph of good

NOTRE Dame Regional High School's recent play, "The Sound of Music," was masterful, meaningful and very relevant to our times. In a world sadly characterized by hate-filled excesses, it is reassuring to see a musical based on a true story that illustrates so well the triumph of good over evil. Congratulations to the many who made it possible.
