Language concerns

THE language in the play "Rumors" is mild compared to that which will be blared out as so-called music heard by those on I-55 passing by a Central High football game on a Friday night.

Praying for enemies

FOR several years I have thought that fighting wars against the terrorists was counterproductive. It is not what Jesus would have taught us to do. We need to pray for our enemies something like this: May the Lord Jesus bless you and keep you; may the Lord Jesus make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the Lord Jesus turn his face toward you and give you peace. may the love of Jesus teach you to love God and your neighbors.

'Great Compromiser'

SEN. Henry Clay of Kentucky is known in American history as the "Great Compromiser." Now that title must at least be shared with President Barack Obama, who brought the two political parties together and avoided a devastating government shutdown.

Paying the debt

THERE were 16 percent more millionaires in 2009 and a surge of 17 percent in 2010. Under President Bush with the Republican controlled congress, we went to more than 10 percent unemployed. The Republicans kept the tax cuts for the wealthy and still want more. So with 33 percent more people paying fewer taxes, we are sure to pay off the national debt. However, it is going to take time as it is left up to the poor and middle class to pay for it.

June bugs

WE have June bugs already! It's just April. Why have the June bugs appeared already? Does that mean we'll have a major infestation this year? I'm new to Missouri. This is just my second spring and the worst thing I have encountered living here are June bugs. Someone please tell me they will go away soon.

Elderly and poor

JUST because I'm old and penniless doesn't mean I'm not a good person. Why does the Republican party hate the elderly and poor so much?

Boehner deal

REPUBLICAN Congressman John Boehner's deal with President Obama and Senator Harry Reid stunned me because I thought there was surely no way Boehner could be a socialist.

Ryan's proposal

CONGRESSMAN Paul Ryan snookered the media. Under the guise of seriously dealing with entitlement reform, Ryan essentially put forth a proposal protecting the tax cuts for the very rich while socking it to seniors in general and large elements of the middle class and poor while eliminating Medicare as we know it. The sad thing is that the media generally bought it and praised Ryan for his courageous effort.

Federal subsidies

I like the idea of a commercial airline flying passengers from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis. But does it take $1.6 million in federal spending when our government is out of money? Our government needs to cut spending and balance the budget. Business travelers can pay full price for a ticket to St. Louis or they can drive or get a ride. This does not make sense to pay $1.6 million for something that is not essential and relatively few people use.

To Obama's credit

THE Republicans will try to claim they are responsible for the rise in employment, but it's Obama and the Democrats who have helped it. If they would not have helped the auto industry when they did, there would have been 20 percent unemployment instead of just a little more than 10 percent.

Reduce from within

PART of the president's new plan to reduce the deficit is to reduce programs for the elderly and the poor. For once I just want to hear we are going to start by reducing spending from within the White House, then the House, and so on.

Sell parks

CAPE Girardeau has too many public parks and most of them hardly ever get any visitors. I say the city should keep the ones that people go to and the rest be sold off for land development.
