I wish the powers that be would take a moment to see the good Safe Harbor brings to the community. I have personally witnessed the love and care given to the animals. They are cared for every day without fail. Who do you think names each animal as they come through the door? Miss Alice knows each and every animal. Also, there will be deaths, considering some cats test positive for feline leukemia and AIDS. Alice spends countless hours rounding up donated food and other needs. I am not an employee or associated with Safe Harbor, just a witness to the kindness.
I had to contact you, because Joe Sullivan just amazes me. I'm an 88-year-old woman, and his columns always make my day when they're in there. I especially enjoyed the one [about] spring time, because I, too, was like his grandmother and had flowers and everything around my house. Keep it up, Joe.
I would just like to comment on the article in the Sunday Missourian regarding SEMO basketball. Although the article's somewhat statistically correct, it doesn't really tell the true story. Number one, Coach Ron Shumate was an excellent basketball coach, a pretty good person and able to goad players into being good basketball players. There were some minor infractions, which at most schools would have been overlooked. Take, for instance, North Carolina. They had students going to class for other students, taking classes where they would automatically get an A. Nothing happens to them. And Gary Garner was an excellent coach, and still is today. And he's a very, very honest individual. The problem lies with the hiring of people after them. That's when the program should have started building on Division I. The hiring of people like John Schaefer, Scott Edgar and Dicky Nutt are the problem, especially when you look at the other people who interviewed for these jobs and where they're at today and what their basketball records are and how their programs are being run.
