I READ the article about the messages on church signs, and I found it to be interesting. But there's a church on Sprigg Street whose messages lately have been of an increasingly political nature. You don't have to separate your religion even from your politics. But I think the tone of these messages is disturbing. The one this week is especially biting and critical. Should the messages be uplifting and helpful or just a chance for you to slight people?
It's a sad day for American education when Southern Illinois University pays a coach much more than it pays teachers and even the president of the university. I'm not sure the coach is as valuable as they say he is. The university is going for prestige and money. That's ridiculous.
I GRADUATED from Scott City High School in 1961. With interest I read of the recent school prom there. I was appalled to read of students dressing like clowns, in blue jeans and wearing work boots. Today's teens seem to think they can do whatever they want, including acting like 2-year-olds. Do school administrators not have any rules and regulations regarding dress and behavior anymore? I suppose not. Some teachers today dress like they are at home doing yard work. Thank you, Mr. Wheeler and Mr. Wright, for your class act back in 1961.
CAPE GIRARDEAU missed out by not having a casino. We go to Metropolis, Ill., every Tuesday and Wednesday. On Sundays we go to Caruthersville. We see a lot of people from Cape. They all talk about how they enjoy the casino. There's nothing to do in Cape and Jackson unless you're a teenager.
AS A socially liberal, fiscally conservative college graduate, many times I'm irked by the positions taken by Gary Rust and the rest of his family in running the Southeast Missourian. Then I found out last Sunday the people in this area are a bunch of losers. If they had finished high school, they would make another half-billion dollars a year, so I understand where the Rusts are coming from. They're playing to their audience.
AS A Southeast Missouri State University student in the late 1960s and early 1970s, I remember the main topic in the scientific world was the population explosion. "The Population Bomb" by Paul Erlich was required reading for many science majors. If what Erlich predicted had occurred, the western world would have been reduced to third-world status several years ago. Yet at that time, every science professor I encountered fervently believed in Erlich's theories. As it turned out, a large part of academia ended up looking silly. The same is going to happen to today's global-warming crowd.
I GREW up in Cape Girardeau. I am a Southeast Missouri State University student about to graduate in May. The university is building a pool, but don't you remember when we had a pool? Officials said it wasn't used enough, so it's boarded up. Now the university is building another pool. It's building the River Campus and didn't even have the money for construction. I can't wait to graduate and get out of Southeast Missouri.
I WAS involved in an accident on North Cape Rock Drive. A gold SUV hit my car in the side of my car and left the scene of the accident. If anybody has any information, please call the Cape Girardeau Police Department. It would be greatly appreciated.
I WAS driving through Jackson and saw a man driving a truck for a business, and he was littering. I called the business phone number that was on the truck and explained that I would appreciate it if the business' drivers would not litter my beautiful community. The owner of the business was rude and made all kinds of comments, so I hung up. From now on when I see people in trucks who are littering, I'm going to call the police. This is a beautiful community, and business owners who reap the benefits of being in this community with the great people we have need to also help do their part in taking care of it. Littering should not be tolerated.
SOMETIMES IT takes more courage to accept the fact that a wrong choice was made. Our brave soldiers need to be pulled out of this hornet's nest. Our troops are and always will be supported by all for what they've sacrificed, but it is wrong to let the president's pride divide our great country.
LEXINGTON AVENUE in Cape Girardeau is one of the most traveled streets in town, and it has potholes in it. It is probably one of the roughest streets in town. The city has not done one thing to Lexington for four or five years, and it's getting bad. Can somebody do something about it, please?
I DISAGREE with the criticism of TJ Greaney, who knocked peaceful Muslims for not criticizing terrorists. That goes for any faction. If they keep their mouths shut, they're condoning the terrorism. Instead of demonstrating against the people who criticize it, let's demonstrate against the people who are doing it.
