I would like to extend my thanks to the person who wrote a note concerning the Christmas lights in Cape County Park. I too am in disbelief that the county commissioners have decided to start charging those of us who set up displays. I was proud to have participated in this event for the past seven to eight years as I felt it was something that I could do for the entire community. When you drive through the park between Thanksgiving and New Year's and notice a display missing, it will be set up in my own yard. All are welcome to drive by and enjoy.
Another member of the Washington political media stepped forward recently to claim he was threatened by the Obama White House, shortly after the White House denied reports that an adviser threatened famed Watergate journalist Bob Woodward. Seems even a supporter of Obama is threatened after just stating the facts in an article about the sequester. They told him he would be sorry. Just shows this administration feels it can control anything by using the "bully pulpit."
President Obama and the Democrats have deprived the Republican Party on the matter of which party is better able to ensure national security and provide a strong national defense. That is why Speak Out comments claiming otherwise have become so shrill and detached from reality.
Charging a fee to display decorations in the park will soon put an end to the large display of Christmas decorations. So many local people and visitors from other places come to see the display, a special attraction that Cape Girardeau is known for. The participants have to buy the supplies, get everything out to the park, then put it all up. It may take one or two days. Then take it all down again and pay $20. Who will do all that? Maybe a few businesses, but if there isn't much to see in the park, very few will drive through. All the soccer and baseball fields can have lights on all winter for long hours; does that not take electricity? Hope the commissioners and Mr. Sander will give this some attention and change the new rules.
If the person who put the divided country comment in the paper would be watching the news the past five years he would know the truth. The day that President Obama was elected, the Republicans set out to do everything in their power to get him out of office. And you claim he is the one who has divided the country.
Another Cape School Board meeting spent on the dress code. Seriously? If Cape Girardeau Public School administrators and the board of education spent as much time on education as they do tinkering with the dress code, the quality of education might get better.
Our government is trying to be more like Europe. We want to make it a right that some people must provide health care, food, housing, child care, education and cellphones for other people who do not work to pay for them. This requires higher taxes and more spending just like in Europe. The problem is that Europe more than has over 11 percent unemployment and more than 20 percent teens unemployment. There are not enough taxpayers to pay the bill. We are trying to follow the same path.
Sequestration illustrates how Republicans place more priority on not raising taxes than maintaining a strong national defense.
