Fabulous job

SOUTHEAST Missouri State University did a fabulous job on the recent production of "Carousel." The performers, especially the pit orchestra, did such a professional job. Folks in Cape Girardeau should be thrilled and proud to have live entertainment of this level in our town.

University ratings

I see that University of Missouri faculty and staff had an opportunity to grade their president. I wonder when Southeast Missouri State University will have an opportunity rate and grade their president on his job at the helm.

Highway cleanup

HERE I am on a bright, beautiful day going north on I-55 from Cape Girardeau to Jackson, and I've never seen so much trash on this highway in all my life. It looks like somebody emptied a garbage truck. It's time we got it cleaned up. Let's all volunteer and get it done.

Let them smoke

IF people want to smoke, let them smoke. If they want to quit, let them quit. I've got a brother with emphysema who smokes one cigarette after the other. If he gets enjoyment out of that, let him alone. I quit cold turkey. I smoked three packs a day. I smoked cigars and pipes, I even chewed tobacco. If you want to quit, you can. It's not a disease. You've got to have willpower. There are too many people sticking their noses into people's faces. That's the reason we can't get along with one another.

Older problem

I read about the arrest of the 44-year-old Sikeston, Mo., man accused of having a shake-and-bake meth lab in his car and causing a fire. People talk about teenage problems. I think we have a bigger problem with older Americans. Instead of being a good example for the younger generation, this older generation is a disgrace. There are a lot of them who should be ashamed of themselves.

Union effect

I read with interest the articles on capitalism. I wonder if unions have anything to do with businesses moving to countries where labor is so cheap. No doubt there is corruption in businesses, but there's also been corruption in labor unions.

County limits

AFTER driving the county roads from Fruitland to Cape Cape Girardeau, I noticed the speed limit is 35 mph on most blacktopped roads and even as low as 25 mph until you get to the Cape Girardeau city limits between Route W and the Humane Society where the speed limit goes up to 45 mph. What is wrong with this picture?

Fighting the positive

COME on, Republicans, admit it. We know why you're fighting against President Obama. You're afraid that what he is doing may benefit someone and make this a better country. And that will make you look like you haven't done anything for the past eight years. End of story.

Rotten politics

AN ode to health care: Nothing's getting done at all, just calling names and yelling. Give me health care quick, I'm sick from rotten politics I'm smelling.

Legal discrimination

SOMEONE wondered why a fraud conviction would receive less punishment than a conviction for marijuana possession. Simple. The former is a white-collar crime. The latter is a blue-collar offense. It's a simple matter of discrimination.

Channeling LBJ

THANK goodness President Obama finally toughened up and said the health care bill deserved an up-or-down vote. It certainly does. It may or may not get the votes needed for passage, but I'm glad Obama finally channeled his LBJ.

Spending increases

IT'S a sad but true fact that every administration has spent more than the preceding one. Percentage-wise, the largest increases in our lifetime have come during the Reagan and Bush 2 administrations, but no administration has spent less than the one before. All the congressional bickering isn't about spending less. It's just about who the money will be spent for. Will it be the wealthiest 5 percent, or the rest of us?

Difficult problems

I was interested in the discussion pro and con about the failure of the war on drugs. From a bird's-eye view I see that this is typical of our country's attitude toward difficult problems. If a problem is too difficult to solve, we just throw up our hands and say "to hell with it," and the next condition is truly hellish.

Before and after

FOR those who create signs, writings and notices that refer to times for events: There is no such thing as 12 a.m. or 12 p.m. "A.m." is for antemeridian, or before noon. "P.m." is for postmeridian, or after noon. Twelve o'clock means at precisely midday or midnight. The correct designation is 12 noon or 12 midnight.
