Doing their job

REGARDING THE hiring of Robb McClary for the county position that wasn't advertised: The commissioners hired him to do the job they were elected to do. It astounds me that Cape Girardeau County residents continue to elect people who don't want to do the job for which they are well-reimbursed for. These positions command a generous full-time salary, yet the people we elect decide they don't have to work. They hire someone who is highly qualified to do the job they should be doing themselves. I don't know what's going on with the county, but it's time our citizens wake up and watch.

Keep your money

DEMOCRATS HAVE the notion that a wealthy person is not a working man. That money did not fall out of a tree. The person who has all that money worked to get it, and he should be able to hang on to it. Why should he be punished for making more money than the next guy? The next guy could make more money too if he really set it mind to it. The working man is not a downtrodden person. A working man could have millions and millions of dollars. He's worked for it. He needs to keep and expand his business and help keep jobs here, not paying more taxes.

Using the gym

I'D LIKE to thank the Salvation Army for opening its gym and allowing church groups to play there. I thank you so much. It's been awesome.

Damaged parks

I THINK the Missourian should take some pictures of Cape Rock Drive and the parks. The four-wheelers are tearing them apart. The police drive by and ignore it. I watch every year, and it costs the parks department lots of money every year. Twin Trees Park is unbelievably damaged.

No apology

IT IS amazing how some people can be so rude in public. I was at a local community-theater production Friday, which was a good show, and someone misplaced his credit card and blamed a bartender, the seating hostess and the fellows taking the money at the door. When they came up with the credit card, which he or his wife had all along, they didn't have the guts to apologize.

Organizing workers

CONGRESSIONAL Democrats are trying to pass an employee free-choice act. It would mean that if more than 50 percent of workers sign cards backing a union, they would be unionized. It would eliminate a secret vote on whether to form a union. Workers opposed to the union would have the face the intimidation tactics of union supports without being able to express themselves in a secret vote.

Better safe than sorry

I KEEP reading lies about the president, how he's made a mess of everything. This is the best economy we've ever had. There are more people working now than during the Clinton years. Maybe President Bush should have taken a chance that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. After all, the whole world said he had them. Maybe he should have taken a chance with the American public. If we had been hit with a nuclear bomb, maybe these people who are so violently anti-American would then be happy. But Bush didn't take a chance. I'd rather be on the safe side than on the sorry side.

Self-made troubles

I KEEP reading about single parents and their problems. I understand that some of those problems were beyond their control. But I suspect that most of these single parents had a hand in whatever happened. Did they need help getting in that condition? Or was it something that they chose to do?"

Not a pretty picture

COULD THERE possibly be anything more sad than a beautiful woman putting a cigarette in her mouth?

Support is needed

IT MAKES me sick that there are people in our country who hate President Bush so much that they will say so to the detriment of our country. Our soldiers are a long way from home fighting a difficult but necessary war. We should be doing everything in our power to support them. It's not supportive for them to hear the whims of doubt from home. There should no doubt in our minds as to the enemy's objective. It is to destroy us. They have told us this time and time again. If you don't believe this, then you can't face reality. There have been times in our country's history where we have found it very necessary to defend our way of life. I believe today is one of those times. We can't withdraw. The enemy will sense our weakness and come after us like wild beasts after the wounded. President Bush understands this. He loves this country and is trying to protect us. We cannot undermine his ability to this. Please have some backbone. No one likes war. Think of the future for our precious children and grandchildren. Please say a prayer for our country.

Help one another

WITH REGARD to these big churches spending more money: I bet Jesus Christ is ashamed of all this money spent on buildings. We have single mothers and people who aren't eating right in the city and county. Wake up and smell the roses. Help one another, for God's sake.

Thanks for the help

I WOULD just like to say a word of appreciation to a couple of men in Cape Girardeau. I'm from Florida. While in Cape at Christmas and shopping, I was purchasing some stuff for my grandson at Howard's on Broadway. Two of the nicest gentlemen, Jack McDonald and Frank Rayburn, were so nice to me. I'd like to thank the two gentlemen from the Howard's and tell them I appreciate what they did for me.

Picking up trash

I WAS on Interstate 55 by the airport and saw all the yellow bags on the side of the road. Thanks to all who picked up the trash. It takes a good person to pick up someone else's trash. I said a prayer for you, whoever you are.

Trash sources

I AM glad to see the Keep America Beautiful campaign is coming to Southeast Missouri. Considering all the litter along our roads and highways, I can assure you that a lot of it comes from people throwing items in the back of their trucks, knowing that it will eventually blow out. This practice is particularly bad around construction sites. This is just as bad as throwing it out the window. Another litter source is trash trucks. Let's all try to keep America cleaner.
