Immoral socks

EVERYBODY KNOWS socks are immoral. They go in a happy couple and the come out as swinging singles.

Stealing flowers

FOR THOSE who steal flowers from another's grave, I'd ask you one thing: Who will put flowers on your grave when you're gone? You need to think about that.

Hurting business

I'D LIKE to thank Cape Girardeau for pretty much closing my business on Broadway with street repairs. You would think the city could have done this without closing the whole street. It's killing everybody over here.

Trash pickup

I'M AWARE that the city only picks up two garbage bags at a time, My large family usually has three garbage bags. I was told by the workers on the trucks that if I would buy two big garbage cans, I could put two bags in each can and they would pick it up that way. So that's what I've done. The last two weeks, the garbage workers only emptied one can. Maybe they don't have enough muscle to lift the heavy cans. If we're paying for trash pickup, why half my trash being picked up? Why does the city charge full price when you're getting half the service?

Thanks for help

TO THE concerned motorist who stopped to help my grandson who was involved in a car accident Wednesday on Route K, I would like to say thank you. And to the kind person who lent him a blanket, thank you.

It's the lying

SURELY GARY Rust can understand the difference between President Clinton firing 93 Republican U.S. attorneys two months after he was sworn in as president and President Bush firing U.S. attorneys of his own party which he had appointment shortly before a midterm election. As usual, it's not the firing of the attorneys. It's lying about the reason for it and how it was done that gets this administration in trouble.

Tornado sirens

TORNADO SEASON is upon us, and our mayor and city council have decided that monuments to themselves such as the river overlook, the landscaping at I-55 and Route K and getting money for the college are more worthy than projects like tornado sirens. I hope they're proud of themselves.

Sharing good news

IF JESUS is the son of God and died and rose again as the Bible claims, then nothing else matters. And we Christians must share this good news. If Jesus is not the son of God, if he did not die on the cross for our salvation or did not rise from the dead, nothing matters.

Great dance

A SINCERE thank you to the Beta Club at Central High School for the great job it did recently producing the dance for seniors. Those of us who supported them by attending the dance enjoyed everything about it and hope that if the club has another dance like this next year, as they are planning, that many more seniors will support these outstanding students.

Suspicious deal

HOW CONVENIENT. If there is collusion between the city council, the property owner and the tenant to get the site designated as blighted, there should be a full investigation. The taxpayers should not foot the bill for the sweetheart deal between the property owner and tenant. This is highly suspicious.

Junk cars

DOES JACKSON have an ordinance about junked cars in driveways and on streets? Bel Air Drive has turned into a junk yard, and the police will do nothing abut it.

Pet responsibility

SOME ANIMALS are being put down because owners can't afford treatments. Shouldn't the pet food company or the source of what contaminated the pet food be held responsible? The only thing pet owners did wrong was buy their animals food.

News sources

OVER A third of the people still support the president because we are smart enough to get our news from sources other than the national media, which is a publicity machine for one party now.

Jackson Manor

THE ARTICLE on Jackson Manor was so heartening. Although nursing homes have improved greatly over the decades, most are still far from an ideal place for people to spend their last years. It is depressing to realize that a costly nursing home which strips the elderly of their dignity is where many of us will end up while the homes' owners become millionaires. Thanks, Jackson Manor, for your humanity.

Thrift supervision?

FOR MANY years, I have wondered why we allow our governments to spend extravagant sums on public buildings, which, as the editorial says, serves only to impress the taxpayers who pay for it. When in Washington, D.C., I stopped at a building in amazement, having noticed that it was the Office of Thrift Supervision. That seemed to be rather an oxymoron.

Pay the tuition

LEOPOLD SCHOOL District is the No. 1 district in Southeast Missouri. The parents who illegally enrolled their students in the district know this. Since they want to continue their children's education at Leopold, no one is stopping them from paying the out-of-district tuition that state law requires.

Which party?

VOTERS WHO had been abandoned and betrayed by the Democratic Party fled to the Reagan Republican Party. To which party will Reagan Republicans be driven because the neocon, open-borderites have betrayed conservative principles?

Delayed mail

I AM a postal employee. I would like to encourage everyone in Southeast Missouri to contact your elected officials and ask why your mail is being sent to St. Louis on Saturdays to be processed. We are capable of processing it at the distribution plant in Cape Girardeau just like we do the rest of the week. We have sent test letters on Saturdays, and mail is usually delayed two or three days longer than when we process it here. Many times the letters do not get postmarked, which could cause a problem with bills if they are mailed close to their due dates. U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson is aware of this and working on the issue.

Sahara's story

WITH EVERYTHING Sahara and her family has gone through, I think Sahara's story should be recognized all over. What a brave young woman Sahara is. My thoughts and prayers go to Sahara, Shannon and Amy. God bless you. You will make it. And what a great job Rick Springfield has done. God bless that angel also.

Potential accident

THERE IS going to be a terrible accident off William Street onto Edgewood Road if the school bus driver doesn't quit stopping right in front of the first house on Edgewood to let two children off the bus. Cars speed on William Street and then try to turn right onto Edgewood Road but can't because the school bus is there. The school bus could pull up to the second or third house on Edgewood Road and still be close enough for the children to walk home.

Creating havoc

LEOPOLD SCHOOL District's administration and staff are not recruiting for the schools teams. These children have been attending Leopold school since kindergarten. Derek Urhahn has not been the superintendent that long. He is not to be blamed for this. It's pretty sad that the selfishness of a few parents is creating havoc for a whole community.
