But they can't count

ALL DURING his campaign, George W. kept telling the American people he trusted them, unlike his opponent who trusted big government. What Bush failed to add was that he trusted the American people to do everything except count ballots.

Those dozen years

TO THE Speak Out writer who said we haven't had a president for the past eight years, I would remind him of those previous 12 president-less years of Reagan and Bush.

Wrong lottery number

I THINK I made a mistake on the number I intended to punch for my lottery ticket. The number I intended to punch won. Whom do I sue?

Can't know intentions

DEMOCRATS ARE insisting on deciding what a person's intentions were when he voted. It seems to me you have to prove a person's intentions just like you have to prove premeditated murder. Nobody can guess what a person's intentions are any more than one an guess at premeditated murder.

Good sports article

I WOULD like to congratulate Bob Miller on the article about the unselfish Tigers. It really was a good article, and I enjoyed it very much.

The real thing

THIS PRESIDENTIAL election finally shows what the politicians really care about. They care about getting elected and how many votes they get. The politicians should take note of what is happening and see how real their promises and convictions and ideologies are.

It goes on and on

AL GORE lost the initial vote count in Florida and then lost the recount of the vote mandated by Florida state law. He has now lost twice and is demanding a third vote recount, this time done by hand by Democrats who control the counties he has selectively chosen. Warren Christopher said that, pending the outcome of this third vote count, the Democrats were going to keep all their legal options open. In other words, Gore wants this count to go on and on until he finally gets the results he likes.

Hijacking the election

I'M A veteran of the U.S. Air Force. I did not join the Air Force to serve my country so that people such as Gore could ignore the constitution and hijack the election.

This smells fishy

JEB BUSH is the governor of Florida. Katherine Harris is the secretary of the state of Florida. She campaigned for George W. Bush. Is the GOP scared of all the votes being counted? I think Bush should concede. After all, Al Gore leads in the electoral so far and has the popular vote. Do what is right, Governor Bush. Call Vice President Gore, and concede. You are the sore loser.

Lacking authority

BECAUSE GEORGE Bush won the initial count in Florida as well as the recount, any Gore presidency would be completely illegitimate and lacking in both legal and moral authority to lead the nation.

That pesky term limit

IF WE only had repealed that rotten amendment that was adopted by the Roosevelt haters back in the early 1950s limiting a president two terms, President Clinton would have run again, and he would have been elected. We wouldn't have this trouble now.

All that technology

ISN'T IT ironic how we are living in the 20th century with all our technology -- computers, phones, faxes, updated equipment -- and we have gone back to a hand count. What has happened to all of our wonderful research?

Let's have a runoff

I HAVE a suggestion that will clearly produce a presidential winner and give him a clear mandate to govern. It would eliminate all legal cases that are popping up would save time in the long run. We have just completed an election where we had two top winners, Bush and Gore. With congressional approval, let's have a runoff between those two candidates. This would produce a clear winner and show the world that democracy works. Then lets get behind that winner as we have always done in the past.

Tigers growling again

I AM calling to congratulate the Cape Central football Tigers on an excellent season, probably the best one they have had in many years. I would just like to say that I think the head coach is doing a great job. The coaching staff is wonderful. Those kids played their hearts out. They deserved everything that happened to them this year. They worked really hard for it. Good luck to all the seniors and everyone else as well. You may not have won the state championship, but you definitely made everyone in the community take notice . The Tigers got their growl back. Good job, guys. Way to go.

Just another trip

VETERANS, I am sure, are looking at President Clinton's trip to Vietnam as a slap in the face. Instead of a foxhole, he is living it up in luxury over there. How can he face a Vietnam veteran who risked his life in the war zone while he was out in the country protesting? What is the purpose of this trip except to take another plane ride at taxpayers' expense?

Laid-back worship

WHERE IS the respect? Last Sunday I was sitting in church and saw a man wearing a hat and drinking a soft drink during the worship service. What is it with hats? Can't men show respect for God by removing their hats in the house of the Lord or not eat or drink during worship service? I think I have seen it all.
