Spend on teaching

ON ONE of the prettiest days of the year I had the opportunity to pass by the new tennis courts that the college insisted on building out at Bertling and Sprigg. There wasn't one person on the tennis court. Now why did we need those expensive courts? The college better get down to teaching and forget spending money.

Get the facts straight

WOULD SOMEONE tell Mr. Bush that there are only 34 soldiers down in Haiti and that 85 percent of the force of Kosovo is made up of European soldiers?

Give up on River Campus

I WOULD think that by this time the Southeast Missouri State University would understand that the citizens of Cape Girardeau do not want the River Campus. Mr. Drury has gone to bat for us. If they hold another election, we will vote against it, so I think they better mark it off of their records.

Good times almost over

SENATOR KINDER has predicted it. Our long national nightmare is almost over. George Bush's impending presidential election victory presages a merciful end to eight years of peace and prosperity.

Do something about it

I AM shocked to see how bad the violence in Cape has become. When is someone going to do something about it? When are programs going to start? There are no leaders in the black community. This is the very reason I left Cape. In my opinion Cape has nothing to offer a working class black family.

Rate down, numbers up

I AM reading in the news briefs about the national murder rate. To report this is the lowest since 1966 gives the wrong impression. It is the lowest per 100,000 but it is not the lowest. There are more people now, so the number of murders can still be up. I think this should be clarified.

Ice skating for all

I WOULD like to comment on Monday's article about the ice skating rink on the front page of the paper. I am so pleased that the paper has decided to put this on the front page of the paper. I think that the ice skating rink needs to draw more awareness because I think there would be more activity if people knew about it and also the leagues and different things. It is an excellent sport for children of all ages and adults. And I wish that the community would get behind the owner of the ice skating rink and help support it more and bring it in to the park and recreation and all kinds of activities. Ice skating is an awesome sport, and they have some wonderful programs.

Party of the rich

REPUBLICANS ARE the party of the rich man who doesn't have to work because he inherited his wealth. Have you ever tried to manage wealth? It is a lot of hard work. The Republicans are also the party of those who have to work and are struggling to save to become well off. Republicans want everyone to become educated, busy and creative and get as rich as they are. They want all people to get ahead. Democrats are for the working people and for the people who won't hit a lick. They want you to keep on working and working so they can keep on spending and spending your money to keep helping those who won't work. They don't want you or the poor people to get ahead or get busy, creative or become well off. But have you ever noticed how rich the Democrat leaders are? You decide.

Time for a change

I AM an Alexander County resident who appreciates your articles on our county's troubles. I see we have the highest poverty rate in the state. I also see we have a vast majority of Democrat voters and officeholders. Coincidence? I think not. Wake up people and get a new outlook on life. Democrats have been running things for years, and nothing improves. Yet you will keep on beating the same old dead horse 00 er, donkey.

Condolences extended

DURING THIS time of grieving may we put aside our political differences. May God bless Governor Carnahan and his family. I am so sorry he died.
