TO THE caller who commented that we should disband the Electoral College: Without the Electoral College, the only states that would be of any importance to a presidential candidate would be New York, Florida, and California. As a Missourian, I seriously doubt any citizen of this state wants those three states choosing the leader of our nation, especially after what occured in New York this fall. The Electoral College was created by our forefathers to allow smaller states to have a voice in the selection of our president and to prevent a mere handful of states from selecting the president. In addition, Missouri has 11 electoral votes, which is a considerable number of votes in a swing state. This is one of the reasons why we saw several presidential candidates visit Missouri over the course of the campaign. And you want to do away with the Electoral College?
TO ALL the good (although probably misinformed) people who think Al Gore was robbed by not getting the undervotes recounted: You should perhaps refer to the Miami Herald (a self-proclaimed Democrat-supporting newspaper) Dec. 10 issue for a firsthand account of what's really happening there. Basically it's saying the actual recount of all the votes in the state by this newspaper's assessment would result in the margin of victory for Bush would be even wider. Broward, Volusia and Palm Beach counties have been recounted in full. Gore can wring no more votes from those heavily Democratic counties. The rest of the state's counties voted predominantly for Bush, and the feeling is that Bush would gain even more votes from a hand recount without holding the ballots up to the light to see if there was a small pinhole of light passing through.
I THINK Bill Clinton signed the three strikes and you're out law. Well shouldn't three strikes and you're out count for the election? The ballots have been counted three times. Each time they show Bush has won. So, Al Gore, you're out.
I THINK they should recount the votes until Al Gore wins. Whatever it takes, but don't let any votes that may hurt him count. Gore and the liberals don't care about every vote. And Gore couldn't care less about dividing our country. Look how he and his disciples have used rich against poor, black against white, big business against working class, the old against the drug companies -- and the list goes on, spreading hate with lies and promises. When will people wise up to their deceit?
WHEN I look at the picture at the Marquette Hotel in the paper, I see nothing remarkable about it. It looks like countless YMCA buildings in America in large cities that are tucked away on some side streets. Unfortunately this building happens to be on what could be one of the main streets of Cape going into the 21st century. I think I would prefer something new and modern there. I think architects could plan something just as wonderful or more wonderful to go in that spot.
SOMEONE IN speak out claimed that the basis of all law and conduct in civilized society is the 10 Commandments. I beg to differ. As Christians we should know that Christ said we should "Love thy neighbor, love the Lord thou God with all thy heart, soul and mind and thy neighbor as thyself, that upon this rests all the law and the profit." That love, unconditional love, is the foundation or the basis of all law. Christ showed this with his life. I do not think that Christians do this with very few exceptions.
