ONE OF your Speak Out callers is still squabbling over David Limbaugh's spin on Christianity. He thinks we ought to call on Catholic conservative William F. Buckley to settle the dispute. I think Buckley is an Episcopalian. And if he is, maybe some people would consider him to be Catholic, but most people in this area consider Catholic to mean Roman Catholic, although some Episcopalians consider themselves to be Anglican Catholics. I think Buckley is the type of person who would have read C.S. Lewis, and Lewis went outside the squabble of whether Episcopalians are Anglican Catholics or Anglican Protestants. Lewis said he was merely Christian. And that's probably where Buckley is.
MY NEIGHBOR had a "Alpha is coming" sign in her yard, and it got stolen. She told me that 40 to 50 of those signs were stolen all over Cape sometime last week. I want the people who are running this Alpha program to know that because of this my family will be praying for your program every day. We made a decision that if the devil wants you out so badly that he had your signs stolen, he must be really afraid of your program. So it must be a good Christian program. We're going to be praying for you, and we wish you the best of luck.
I SEE where a Cape Girardeau property owner is hollering about the assessment on his property. Seems to me like he's got a legitimate complaint. But we sat still and let these special-interest groups and lobbyists go to Jefferson City and lobby for this increase in property rates every two years. Personally, I don't think our property increases in value at all unless you add something to it. It shouldn't be assessed until it's sold. That's the time to reassess it. If a person bought a piece of property, that's where it should be assessed. If he sells it, or dies and it goes into others' hands, then assess it for a selling price. This was a bad law to begin with.
I AGREE with the comment about McClure being an eyesore. However, trailers are not the only problem. There are trailers that are very well kept in McClure. Houses are responsible for most of the mess. Regardless of what one lives in, one should clean up.
I'D LIKE to respond to comment about nurses, saying they sit around and eat and read the newspaper. I'm a nurse, and I'm here to tell you we don't sit in chairs and read newspapers. We are on our feet a good seven hours out of the eight, and most of the time the nurses are still at work after their eight-hour shift trying to do the paperwork they didn't have time to do during their shift, while the techs all go home at the end of their shift, leaving the nurses to finish up the paperwork. I don't think the caller understands how much paperwork is required by the government just to be a nurse and to take care of patients.
REGARDING THE Speak Out comment about nurses sitting on their duffs: I don't think the caller knows what he's talking about. My husband was hospitalized several times this year. The nurses were on the go continuously. They aren't sitting around. From what I understand, those nurses work 12-hour shifts, but those 12-hour shifts usually ended up being 15 to 18 hours. It's an insult for this caller to comment about something like this. These nurses work, and they work hard.
I RECENTLY purchased a CD by a local singer and songwriter, and it contained a song entitled "Boys in Blue." It seems appropriate to me for local law enforcement departments to adopt this song as their theme. This was especially true following the wounding of two of our boys in blue recently.
I AGREE with the caller about who should run for mayor this time. It should be a city councilman who is experienced with city matters.
