Cardinals are priority

When will you people quit looking at your own bottom line? Supporting the Cards should be a top priority for the state. Yes, I realize they ultimately are a private business, but they are necessary to the health and well-being of St. Louis. When St. Louis does well, so does the rest of the state. Stop looking at this as a waste of your tax dollars and as an investment. This is not corporate welfare.

Writer's testament

DAVID LIMBAUGH'S theological musings are a monumental testament as to why President Bush's faith-based initiatives are moribund.

Help from Buckley

SOMEONE IN the know needs to intercede and straighten us out concerning this squabble over David Limbaugh's spin on Christianity. I hereby appeal for a special column from the godfather of modern conservatism, Catholic conservative William F. Buckley.

Sounds good

DON'T STOP the church bells in Advance from ringing. I love the sound.

Crazy reaction

ANGELA KNAUP'S vitriolic attack on the sport of baseball made me so mad I broke my bat in two with my own bare hands, ate the cover off an autographed baseball, gnawed my glove in half and, with spikes on, jumped up and down on the letter she wrote.

Politician-think

I SEE that Peter Kinder supports the stadium for the St. Louis Cardinals, even though I think it's clear that the majority of people in Southeast Missouri do not support taxpayer money going to this project. This is just another case of a politician-lawyer who thinks he's smarter than the people he's serving.

Wrong decision

A SPEAK Out caller said the Taste Lounge has been a thorn in the community's side. Personally, I think it's just a bar where the majority of the customers are black. I think it's had some problems, but there's nowhere else for the majority of the black people to go in Cape Girardeau to have a nice time. The owner cannot control people. You can control pets, but not people. The liquor license should not have been taken. It's a place where people can go to have a nice time, not to be criticized about going there.

It's competitive

ON THE Opinion page of the Southeast Missourian, an editorial tried to explain why the Cardinals need a new stadium. It said all the other stadiums as old as Busch have either been replaced or are in the process of being replaced. It said the owners were firm that they can't remain competitive in the current ballpark. Then, on the sports page, it said the Cardinals had a sellout crowd the night before of 48,517 people. That sounds very competitive to me. I think it's a lot better than building a new stadium and nobody going to it.

Read the books

WHO WON the 2000 election? Did the Supreme Court or the people decide? Who are our justices serving on the Supreme Court? It includes seven Republican appointees and two Democratic appointees. These and many other questions are answered in two books, "The Betrayal of America" by Vincent Bugliosi and "Supreme Injustice" by Alan Dershowitz. Both books are available in local bookstores. This should be required reading for all Americans so we will be informed.

Self-help success

I WATCHED "60 Minutes" about the woman who was made president of Brown University. She's a black person who was a sharecropper's daughter. She got out and worked and did the best she could instead of sitting around waiting for someone to give her something to help her. She helped herself, and it paid off well. Whether she was black, white or yellow, this shows what people can do if they strive to do things rather than have someone else do it for them.

Power-plant concerns

I'M CALLING about the proposed Kinder Morgan Power Co. plant. The company is from Houston. Why can't they build this power plant in Houston and pollute the air there? I challenge all parents to watch their medical bills before and after the power plant is built. Then we can sue them for damaging our children.

Not the same

I CAN tell you that there would be nothing more obnoxious than twice the number of crosses than there are already on the highway. I just drive by and ignore them anyway. AIDS and unwanted pregnancy are very different. Usually AIDS is incurred when there are two consenting adults. Unwanted pregnancies happen in girls as young as 12 years old. Teen-agers can engage in things they may very well regret. Sometimes women are in abusive relationships and maybe they do not want a baby. Women are raped. If a woman chooses not to have an abortion, that is her right, but do not take away other government rights away from women. This is from a woman who stands for women's rights.

Use special district

IF THE St. Louis Cardinals need a new ball park, let St. Louis have a special district around the park with a tax on food, motels, gambling boats and the tickets to the games to pay for the new ballpark. That way the people who want to go to the ball games would pay for the park themselves and not cost the rest of the people a penny.

Disregarding the law

I FIND it really interesting that some people choose to go into law enforcement and blatantly ignore the laws they are there to enforce. I went to St. Louis, and on I-55 in Ste. Genevieve County a Cape Girardeau County sheriff's officer passed me when I was driving 72 mph. I accelerated to try to keep up with him. I gave up at 80 mph. These people who are enforcing the laws should be an example. I'm tired of our tax dollars spent on people who have a blatant disregard for the law.
