THREE CHEERS for Herb Nance. It seems like everything you find anymore is made in China. I went to buy a pair of shoes the other day, and that's all I could find. I came home without buying a pair of shoes. As a veteran, it's my God-given right not to buy from China.
I'M CALLING to comment on Mount Auburn Road. I'm very disappointed with the way the road has been expanded with striping. I think that what this has done to the frontage of people's yards is disgraceful. This was a residential area long before it was commercial, and there are very nice homes in this area. We need to find a way to reroute around residential areas while we can still save these areas. Even though there are commercial areas on either side of the residential areas, there should be some way to work it out for all involved.
WHEN WE talk about oil supplies, it always seems to come down to the Mideast. Most Americans don't realize that when we buy oil from overseas, we are paying American companies such as Texaco and Exxon. People also do not seem to realize that we get almost as much oil from Venezuela and Canada as we do from Saudi Arabia bought largely from American companies. For oil, domestic and foreign are one and the same.
I AGREE with the comment about the Cardinals being an exception to corporate welfare. The Cards have been a Missouri tradition and source of pride since the 1890s, and even though they are privately owned and their bottom line comes first, the Cardinals are not inherently evil or monopolistic like most big American companies. We need to support our team that has given us so much joy through the years.
I'M NOT saying Cape is a conservative town, but a person considered a liberal in Cape would, in the rest of the country, be thought of as a right-wing wacko.
JON RUST compared the waning days of the Missouri General Assembly to a circus. That is an apt analogy. Since Rust is apparently seeking entertainment, he publicly announced his intention to attend the embarrassing spectacle. As a word of caution, I would remind him that if he plans to view any of the various donkeys on exhibit, they can be quite stubborn. When it comes to the elephants, they may give the appearance of being gentle, harmless beasts, but beware. They can turn on you and crush you like a gnat. My suggestion would be that Rust should hang out with human beings rather than politicians.
IT IS a shame to see two city council members, Jay Purcell and Richard Eggimann, build their political issues on the backs of our police chief and the officers. These men and women have a tough job to do and don't get paid enough to do it. I work and live in south Cape. I have seen Chief Rick Hetzel working with citizens here trying to improve our safety and neighborhoods. I have also seen Councilman Tom Neumeyer and the city manager, Michael Miller, at different meetings listening to citizens. I have never seen Purcell or Eggimann do anything but pay lip service to citizens. The chief and Neumeyer are right to work with the people who live here and not try to guess what we need from City Hall.
SOMEONE ONCE said, "Your rights stop where my nose begins." Peace disturbance is a violation of the law, and the violator forfeits his rights when he breaks the law. If loitering creates problems, then that also comes under peace disturbance. Police officers will not allow those violators to continue just because their feelings are hurt. The police need 100 percent support to do their job, which is law enforcement.
