I'LL TELL you why Gov. Bob Holden is letting Jay Nixon's lawyer friends rape Missouri to the tune of $250 million for little actual work on the tobacco settlement. Those friends are his contributors. Everyone knows that to get ahead in the Democratic Party, you have to pay tribute to the trial lawyers. In this case, Holden's paying them $250 million that belongs to Missouri taxpayers. It's offensive. The Southeast Missourian is right to call Holden to task. All of Missouri should call Holden to task. This is a disgrace.
YES, INDEED, I have lived long enough to know which political party is for the working man and woman, and it certainly isn't the Republican Party with its trickle-down economic theory.
NEWLY HIRED Cape Central High School principal Mike Cowen's policy of not allowing administrators to coach is abhorrent. It is of immeasurable benefit for students, teachers and administrators to see each other in different educational contexts and interact accordingly. The best educators are those who are involved with students in a variety of settings. I implore Cowen to reconsider and change this wrongheaded policy.
DON'T LISTEN to the Bush rhetoric about an energy crisis forcing us to drill for oil everywhere. The two are completely unrelated. There are too many Californians using a limited amount of electricity. Finding more oil might drop gas prices a couple of pennies for about a week, but not much more than that.
HAD THE Japanese vessel Ehime Maru been an alien destroyer for a country the United States was at war with, where would the nuclear attack submarine Greeneville be today? Are our naval submarine crews so inefficient they can't spot another vessel immediately on top of them?
REGARDING THE injured trash collector in Jackson: The driver of the car that struck him was charged with illegal passing. Most states where I have lived have a different level of charges when the infraction results in personal injury or death. That trash collector is going to remember this for a long while.
I'M WRITING about the 43-year-old who said senior citizens who drive are more dangerous than teen-agers because of their eyesight. I'm 74, and I can see much better than when I was 50. I had cataracts removed in both eyes, and now I have 20-20 vision in both eyes. I know I pay more attention to the road than most teen-agers.
I MUST speak out for the River Campus. I love this city. It has so many positive qualities: shopping, manufacturing, health care, schools, transportation. But the greatest jewel in Cape Girardeau's crown is Southeast Missouri State University. For travelers crossing the new Emerson Memorial Bridge, their first glimpse of the city will be the restored seminary buildings, the planned visitors' center, a new performing arts center and a museum complex. Some vocal opponents of the River Campus have let dollar signs cloud their vision. Let's move ahead with this project. Cape Girardeau will have a one-of-a-kind showplace to be very proud of.
SO NOW they can arrest people for minor traffic violations and put them in jail. I wonder what our forefathers would have thought about what this country's coming to? It's time people stood up for their rights. The states should have the rights, not the federal government pushing everything.
ARE WE not showing the brutality and sharing the hatred of our neighbors when we view the death of Tim McVeigh as entertainment? God help us.
