Watching the workers

I NOW know the answer to the riddle of how many Cape Girardeau city workers it takes to install a sign. It takes five. One to dig the hole. One to stand there while the other guy holds the sign. Then the original guy puts the dirt back in. So you have two guys doing the work. Three men stand there the entire time and watch. How do I know this? Because they did it in front of my house. And we wonder why our bills are so high and why we can't get any work done in the city. According to what I saw, 60 percent of our city work force watches the other 40 percent do the work. There's a problem here. Someone needs to check into it.

Eggs in trees

I'D LIKE someone to tell me what the tradition is behind hanging Easter eggs from trees, as is done in this area. I've lived here a number of years and never have been able to figure it out. Also, if someone could tell me how they attach those eggs to the tree, I'd sure appreciate it. I'm a grandma now, and I want to do fun things like that.

Real history lesson

THIS IS really pitiful. I just asked my seventh-grader and sixth-grader if they had heard about the situation with China and the United States. Neither one of my two children, who attend school, knew anything about it other than what we had discussed at home. Why are the teachers not discussing this? This is history in the making. It's about time we start educating our children to understand consequences.

A pretend law

BEWARE, SOUTHEAST Missouri: Political correctness is intruding on your lives. The Jackson School Board, with good intentions, passes a blatantly unconstitutional ruling. They have no power over our children off school grounds. They'll lose in court. The kids call it a "pretend law." If you have a problem, contact the police. They'll prevent the illegal behavior. They do a good job in our town.

Hold up on berets

THIS CONFLICT we're having with communist China really concerns me. It's bad enough they're holding American servicemen and our high-tech plane. But I can only imagine how long it will take to get the new berets for our Army personnel now.

Wasting money

THE POSTAL Service should have raised the price of stamps two cents instead of one. They need to watch what they spend, especially the postmaster general. It seems like he's just wasting money.

Amazing story

JEAN BELL Mosley's "Wide Meadows" is just amazing. There is never an end to the excitement and thrill you get reading her words. She's an incredible talent and an incredible asset to this community.

Fuzzy math

SO THE Postal Service wants to suspend Saturday delivery. Well folks, this in a nutshell tells you exactly what the problem is: a complete and total lack of common sense among management. When is the Postal Service going to tell the public how much money is given out each year as bonuses to people in management positions? The USPS is losing hundreds of millions of dollars each year, but local postmasters receive a year-end bonus regardless of whether the USPS makes or loses money. By the way, your local mail carrier who is out on the streets every day in the rain and snow and heat gets nothing except more rhetoric to try to get productivity increased. I'm an employee of the USPS. If we're losing money, where are they finding the extra money to give out bonuses? The Postal Service management invented the term "fuzzy math."
