ALL YOU folks who continue to try to push what the Bible says on everyone else are no different to me than the Moonies of a few years back. It gets old. Please quit trying to tell us it's the law of the land. CAN YOU imagine having been the leader of a nation during the terrible 17th-century Thirty Years' War or for a portion of time during the horrific Hundred Years' War, which preceded it by several centuries? Now comes David Limbaugh who, in a column published a while back, tries to convince us that George Bush is inheriting a very difficult time. ...

Sound like Moonies

ALL YOU folks who continue to try to push what the Bible says on everyone else are no different to me than the Moonies of a few years back. It gets old. Please quit trying to tell us it's the law of the land.

Some perspective

CAN YOU imagine having been the leader of a nation during the terrible 17th-century Thirty Years' War or for a portion of time during the horrific Hundred Years' War, which preceded it by several centuries? Now comes David Limbaugh who, in a column published a while back, tries to convince us that George Bush is inheriting a very difficult time. Please. Give me a break. We're experiencing the longest period of economic prosperity in our nation's history. Relatively speaking, Bush is inheriting a virtual utopian situation unknown to any other leader in human history. Limbaugh's conclusion seems to reveal a lack of historical perspective so shocking that I can only conclude that he is putting us on.

What dignity?

WHERE ON God's earth do some of you get the misconception that George W. Bush is bringing dignity to anything?

No connection

SIKESTON STANDARD Democrat publisher Michael Jensen recently wondered why Republicans can't connect with African American voters. That's easy. They simply don't know how to walk the walk and talk the talk when it comes to relating to African Americans specifically and all hyphenated Americans in general. Except for the minor matter of his race, Bill Clinton was America's first black president. It's not a matter of government programs. It's a matter of process. With a few exceptions, the ability of Republicans to relate to black folk is reminiscent of Steve Martin's efforts in the movie "The Jerk."

A socialist mole

I'VE COME to the conclusion that there's no way Southeast Missourian editorials reflect a consensus of the editorial board. For time immemorial the Southeast Missourian has been emphasizing the verities of inter- and intra-school competition as a way to improve student test scores. Now comes the Kinders (Richard and Jerry) offering a $10,000 bonus to a number of the best of Cape's public school teachers. And what happens? Though you praise the Kinders and their effort, you hasten to add that the teaching staff must not, in their naturally competitive desire to get the bonus, abandon collegiality, cooperation and other ooey-gooey stuff. This a a major sellout of the Southeast Missourian's dog-eat-dog social Darwinistic philosophy -- a sellout of such proportions that I can only conclude there is a socialist mole on the Southeast Missourian editorial board.

View is improved

I AM so glad someone finally cleared out the parking areas in the uptown and courthouse areas in Jackson. You can finally see when you pull away from an intersection that it is clear to go instead of nosing your car out into the street to see if anyone is coming.

Stop-sign woes

ALL THE talk about cameras at stoplights is interesting. But what about the motorists running the stop signs, especially the four-way stop at Bloomfield and Koch? Or the four-way at Bloomfield and West End? Of course, you have the people who stop 20 feet back from the stop sign. It might help if there were some lines marking where you are supposed to stop. Maybe our police department can help with this problem, if it has the time.
