I WANT to say thanks again to the young gentleman who helped me get up after I had fallen on the ice at a car wash in Jackson. It was an extremely hard fall, and I hit my head on the ice and concrete. This young man took time out to help me up and to get back into my car. I could not have made it without his help. It is a good feeling to know there are still some good and caring folks around. He was a blessing to me. I deeply appreciate what he did...

Blessed help

A vote for Clinton

I GET so frustrated reading about the Democrats causing trouble for George W. Bush's Cabinet choices. Have Republicans forgotten about all the scandals they tried to pin on Bill Clinton from the first day he stepped into office? If Clinton would have been able to run for a third term, he would have been elected again overwhelmingly. I would have voted for him. We have had a good economy and a good living the last eight years. Clinton's private life was his own. It did not interfere with his job. Someone commented in Speak Out that the joke was leaving the White House. We'll have to wait and see if we have a bigger joke in there now.

Follow his example

IT IS sad that people in Missouri have forgotten what a good governor and attorney general John Ashcroft was. How soon we forget. I'm sure Missourians were aware he was a Christian and conservative when they elected him. I congratulate state Sen. Jim Mathewson on his good memory dating back to 1992 to remember that then-Governor Ashcroft had not seen the "The Yearling." More people would be ahead spiritually and financially if they attended fewer movies.

Support for Kelly

KELLY SCHOOL District is a district I am proud of. I went there, and my children have gone there. People want their kids to go to Kelly. The real problem is times have changed, and they are changing faster than ever. Some people cannot accept change. Every change since Thomas W. Kelly gave the land for the consolidation has been for the betterment of the communities involved. The district is generating more tax money per square foot from mobile-home sites than from farmland. I am proud of the school board and the members of the Builders for Tomorrow Committee. I am proud we have people who have risen above the rest to lead the direction of Kelly's education. From what I've heard, they are making important decisions before the bond issue comes up for a vote again. The next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

Broadway blues

THE BUSINESS owner and resident in your story on the Broadway widening project said the new street will be a big improvement, and they were right. But I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would put up with the inconvenience, some of which could have been avoided. Businesses along the widening project have been seriously hurt because their customers couldn't get to them easily -- or, in some cases, at all. Now we may have to wait until April so the weather will be warm enough to finish. This hasn't been handled well at all.

Walking the walk

IT WAS good to read about the grant for the new river walk in downtown Cape Girardeau. This will be a fine addition to the city. I only wish there was a way to put a platform on top of the floodwall so people who visit the river would have a good observation platform. Can that be included in the project that will build the new river walk?
