THANK YOU for your editorial outlining the reasons why Sen. Jean Carnahan has not yet made a decision on whether or not to confirm John Ashcroft as attorney general. I think it is a testimonial to Carnahan that, though the Southeast Missourian was an almost continual critic of her late husband, she sees fit to confide in you her many understandable reasons for delaying a decision on the Ashcroft nomination. Some might say the Southeast Missourian has no clue as to why Carnahan is still contemplating the appointment and that you guys are stirring the pot by attempting to put pressure on her to commit before the hearings on Ashcroft have begun. However, that's a cynical interpretation. The Southeast Missourian doesn't operate that way. Did she confide in any other members of the press what her reasons were for reserving judgment on the Ashcroft nomination, or did she grant you an exclusive interview? If so, congratulations.
I'M SEEING a lot of news about the problem of hog manure in these big feed lots and also cattle. If the government would make it lucrative for farmers to go back to having only up to 100 head and feed them in a pasture and have them graze clover and such rather than the supplements they feed today, there wouldn't be a problem with waste. But it's these big consolidated producers that concentrate the hogs in small areas that causes the problem. There never was a problem when we used to raise hogs on the farm in fields.
IN SPEAK Out, I can hardly believe all the thank yous being expressed to our honest citizens. It happened to me too. An older senior citizen. I'd like to personally thank the two women who found my purse in the basket on the parking lot at Wal-Mart and turned it in to the service desk. They'll never know how thankful I am. God bless them both for that kind deed.
IT CERTAINLY was a bad night for driving Saturday night with all the rain and the roads being slick. I certainly am glad I didn't have an accident. Because if I had had an accident, I or my family would have sued Dodge and Goodyear Tire, and I probably would also have sued the company that produced the cassette tape that I had in my tape player, because isn't that the way things are done? That's exactly what our new senator did. I am a little bit surprised that Jean Carnahan and her attorneys didn't try to sue God, since it was an act of God that caused the plane crash. Of course, I guess I shouldn't be that surprised. There's no way an attorney could figure out how to find God.
I'D LIKE to Speak Out about the parking situation at Alma Schrader School here in Cape Girardeau. I'm the parent of two children who go to Alma Schrader. It's getting quite frustrating trying to pick up or drop off your children when there is plenty of parking around. There are so many people parking in areas that are clearly marked "no parking." But there's no enforcement of this. If there were more enforcement, there would be less frustration when parents drop off their children. And I believe people would be a lot calmer when they drop off their children at the schools. It's so frustrating to go up there and they have everything blocked when it's clearly marked not to park there. I just wanted to complain about it.
AREA CRISIS intervention counselors, standby. Be prepared to act in the near future. I don't think Southeast Missourian editorialists are going to be able to cope when the proposed Bush tax cut is, with Bush's tacit approval, compromised away into virtual nothingness.
DID SOME of you fine, upstanding citizens ever stop to think that the terms "good," "honest," "decent" and "Christian" have different meanings to each one of us?
Thanks for filling the potholes. A big improvement.
