I READ to my spouse, because he was busy with budget work, the allegations against John Ashcroft in today's paper. I asked my husband what he thought of them. He smiled with his usual humor and said, "Sounds wonderful. Compassionate conservatism at work." Is George W. Bush going to follow in his father's footsteps? The man who promised no new taxes? Now we have his son who promised compassionate conservatism. I ask, Where is the compassion in nominating Ashcroft?...

What compassion?

I READ to my spouse, because he was busy with budget work, the allegations against John Ashcroft in today's paper. I asked my husband what he thought of them. Good paper service

I WANT to say thanks to a good paper boy. I want to thank Brian for putting my paper closer to my house. I hope when he's 86 years old someone will do something nice for him. Thanks, Brian.

Ashcroft's record

THE BLACK leadership and liberals have attacked John Ashcroft of being a racist for honoring Confederate soldiers who fought for their homes, their families and states' rights. How many owned slaves? Maybe one out of 10,000. Ashcroft honored and did more for blacks in Missouri than previous governors and senators we've had. Some don't understand you can be a racist and a hate-monger even if you're black. And the real issue is his pro-life stand and Christian values, which liberals can't accept.

Fear the consequences

AS ALWAYS, David Limbaugh has hit the target right on center, this time about John Ashcroft. Of course Ashcroft's opponents are paralyzed with panic. They're desperately afraid Clinton, Gore and Hillary are going to be brought to justice and convicted of treason. That's the reason Gore was so charitable and striving for PR support in his last and second concession speech. He was trying to save his traitorous neck when future justice demanded his head. Now he and Clinton and all their henchmen will be fighting tooth and nail to keep Ashcroft from being confirmed, for fear justice will finally catch up with them.

Sitting on the flag

I'D LIKE to call your attention to a Dec. 15 picture in the Southeast Missourian. It's a picture of the Beatles sitting and standing on the American flag. I almost took a second breath. The American flag is very dear to my heart, and seeing that picture felt like a stab in the heart. I thought other patriotic veterans would notice this also.

Just say he's alive

I READ with some interest a recent comment from a caller who took great offense to an article in which Southeast Missourian reporters referred to former governor Mel Carnahan as "dead." I must say I'm as outraged as the Speak Out caller. How dare reporters at the Southeast Missourian refer to a dead man as dead? I can't believe it. In the future, I hope that the Southeast Missourian will refer to Carnahan as being a person who is alive.

A piece of history

THIS IS for the caller who complained about the college students who want to save the old Marquette Hotel. Once that building is gone, there's a part of history that's gone forever. They don't build buildings like that any more. It's a complete waste of a perfectly good building, letting it just rot like that. That building appears to be structurally sound, at least from the outside. There are a lot of things they can do with it. They could convert it into studio apartments. I don't appreciate the idea that some people just automatically assume it should be torn down. What would we put there? A parking lot?

Thanks for checkbook

I WANT to thank the person or persons who found my checkbook in a shopping cart at a Cape Girardeau grocery store and turned it in. Thank you, and God bless you.

Been there, done that

I'VE BEEN watching the comments about Bush's new Cabinet. This ain't my father's Oldsmobile. It's my father's Studebaker.

Strange to behold

STRANGE TO my thinking is that while the economy was booming full force, the Republicans wanted to give all the credit to their members of Congress. Now that the economy is faltering, it's all President Clinton and Al Gore's fault. The Republican thinking process is a strange thing to behold. No, it's pitiful.
