No lethal force

I JUST finished reading about the man who fired a pellet gun at our fine police officers. Not for the first time, we should be extremely proud of our officers and their ability to handle such situations without using lethal force.

Leadership, courage

FROM A soldier in Iraq: I want to send out a heartfelt merry Christmas to all my family, friends, fellow soldiers and all my fellow Americans. I especially want to wish President Bush and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld a merry Christmas and thank them for their leadership and courage in the war on terror. As I sit here on Christmas morning some 7,000 miles from home, I'm reminded of our great country, wonderful leaders, all our freedoms and the things that make life worthwhile. God bless America. Merry Christmas to you all.

Learning arrogance

COMMON SENSE is only useful in changing the oil in your car or house training a dog? How sad that this is what your higher education has taught you. My father in law only had an eighth-grade education, but he was able to help those intellectual individuals accomplish the tasks that were menial, yet beyond their learning capabilities. I'm not saying education is not beneficial. I'm only saying that talking down to someone who doesn't have a degree of higher learning shows a lack of true education and puts oneself on a pedestal from which one will fall and make a resounding crash without the ability to rise again. In other words, get your nose out of the air, or you will drown when it rains.

We had our chance

IN RESPONSE to the person who doesn't want to see billboards advertising strippers on the way to Kansas City: We Missourians had a chance to get rid of all the billboard advertising just a few years ago. But thanks to a powerful lobby and marketing campaign against the bill, you get to suffer through stripper advertisements and I get to suffer through walnut bowl, gas station, firework superstores and all the other billboard advertisements instead of enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Do better job

I THINK Cape Girardeau and the Missouri Department of Transportation should have done a little better cleaning the streets. There were a lot of areas that could have used a little more attention.

... a great job

I WOULD like to thank the Cape Girardeau Public Works Department for the outstanding work its crews did this past weekend keeping our main roads clear. They worked through the holidays to make sure we could get where we needed to go. Thank you.

Need a snow plan

AS A business owner, I want to say that I believe Cape Girardeau let us down. The snowstorm was forecast several days out. How could the city not have been prepared better? More than 48 hours after the storm the main arteries around our vital commercial retail areas were still in horrible condition. Siemers Drive was one of the worst. Why was this street given so little attention? Why aren't our tax dollars being used for aggressive snow removal? I realize this storm was not typical of weather here, but I believe it is time the city developed a plan to deal with snow emergencies. Cape should have designated snow routes, streets that are marked for priority snow removal. Parking on these streets prior to a forecast storm would be prohibited, allowing plowing all the way to the curb. Cape has, at best, a haphazard plan for dealing with snow. Business owners deserve much better than this.

No bills, no checks

WHERE IS my mail a week later? I am still waiting. The mail carriers go where they want to go and forget those of us who need our paychecks for bills. I can't tell the water company or electric company that I can't pay them because my mail hasn't been delivered in a week.
